Q: Home sharing does not work with iTunes 12

I have been using home sharing with iTunes a lot, mainly to stream TV shows from my Mac Pro (2008) to my Apple TV (3rd Gen). But after installing Yosemite and iTunes 12 it doesn't work any longer. My Apple TV finds the iTunes Library, but can't connect with it. At the same time home sharing worked just fine with my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 (iOS 8.0.2). After installing iOS 8.1 home sharing with my iOS devices doesn't work, too – same problem as with Apple TV: iTunes library is found but devices can't connect with it.

I already tried to solve the problem with the suggestions on Apples troubleshooting page:  Fehlerbehebungsmaßnahmen für die Privatfreigabe

My setup:

  • Mac Pro (2008) with OS X 10.10 (14A389), iTunes 12.0.1.26, connected via Ethernet and WiFi
  • Router: Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7270
  • iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1
  • iPad 2 with 8.1
  • Apple TV (3rd Gen), newest software update, connected via Ethernet

Any ideas, what the reason for that problem could be and how to solve it?

Thanks a lot in advance.

BTW: Sorry for my English. I am not a native speaker.

Greetings from Germany

    I tried all this, too, and more, repeatedly, and in different sequences - OMGosh - this is a hassle and still it doesn't work.

    What worked for me was to assign a specific IP address to each appleTV.

    Since there is no static ip address config in the appleTV, I did it through my Airport Extreme router.  There was a "reservations" tab that would assign an ip address to a MAC address.  I imagine other routers would have similar settings

    I tried all of the other options on this thread and the suggestion to roll back to 12.0.1.26 was the only one that worked for me.  Thanks for posting it.

    My Setup:

    * Windows 8.1

    * Airport Extreme (6th gen)

    * Apple TV (2nd gen)

    Yes! Changing the sharing name on the Mac where my iTunes library resides worked for me. The name I had was already perfect, so I just changed one letter, saved it, then changed it back. I'm finally able to open my shared library again.

    Tried all the methods over months still no luck for me.

    I am quite sure the home sharing problem is from iTunes itself because non of my iPad iPhone ATV are connecting to my iMac.

    Are we ever gonna have an official iTunes updates about this issue? I am very disappointed Apple!!

    iTunes Match is obviously Apple's solution to Home sharing now. Apple has gotten entirely too greedy and now they want to charge you an extra $24.99 a year to have the ability to transfer music between your devices.

    Ugh.

    Hi,

    I'm writting from Spain, and it is happening the same proble. Just, when I updted to last version iTunes (12.1..4) I lost the option of "home sharing" in my Apple TV and to share iTunes libraries in my iPhone 5S

    Why? Is it true that the solution is with iTunes Match = 24,99$ per year?

    I can't believe that was the answer to the new iTunes 12. I was looking all this time under "STORE" and was saying to myself, "I'm freakin logged in. Why won't apple tv 3 not see my sharing?!"

    Thanks for the answer.

    iTunes>FILE>HOME SHARING>TURN ON

    An extra step added. Thanks apple!

    Renaming my itunes library name fixed this issue

    iTunes 12

    Apple TV3

    iPhone 6 plus

    iTunes-->Edit-->Preferences-->General-->Library name

    I also did the following that did not help

    Logging out of itunes store and logging back in

    Turning off and turning on Home sharing on itunes/Apple TV/iPhone

    Shutting down all the systems(power out) including router and powering back in.

    Hope this helps

    Windows 7, iTunes 12, iPad 8.3

    What worked was:

    FILE>HOME SHARING>TURN OFF HOME SHARING on PC

    SIGN OUT OF HOME SHARING on iPad

    CLOSE ITUNES on PC

    REOPEN ITUNES

    FILE>HOME SHARING>TURN ON HOME SHARING

    SIGN IN TO HOME SHARING on iPad

    Oddly, if I turned off the Home Sharing via Edit>Preferences it didn't work! Now we'll see how I go before it loses it again.

    I had the same problem this morning.  I took these steps and it solved the issue.  Perhaps this can help you and others who are experiencing the same problem:

    1. turned off home sharing and signed out of iTunes on my PC and also signed out of home sharing in iPhone 5 (settings>music>home sharing)

    2. closed iTunes and restarted iPhone

    3. logged in to iTunes and activated my PC.  this step is crucial (for some reason my PC wasn't activated, a mystery). turned on home sharing

    4. logged in to home sharing on my iPhone (in settings)

    This worked for me.  Good luck!!

    This has happened several times now.  Works fine, then stops.  They push updates, and things that used to work no longer do.  But, if you remove sharing,, add sharing, sign in, sign out, stand on your head, on a Wednesday, during a full moon, MAYBE you get it going again.

    Sure AppleTV is cheap, but if Apple won't fix their crap, I'm moving to something that works.  This is ridiculous.  Life is too short to spend time on silly crap like this...

    I didn't read this whole thread so apologies if Im repeating previous comments but I have solved the issue by resetting my wifi (unplugging it and then plugging it back in.) That worked today with iTunes 12.2 and it has worked in the past too.Hope that can help someone.
