Q: Home sharing does not work with iTunes 12

I have been using home sharing with iTunes a lot, mainly to stream TV shows from my Mac Pro (2008) to my Apple TV (3rd Gen). But after installing Yosemite and iTunes 12 it doesn't work any longer. My Apple TV finds the iTunes Library, but can't connect with it. At the same time home sharing worked just fine with my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 (iOS 8.0.2). After installing iOS 8.1 home sharing with my iOS devices doesn't work, too – same problem as with Apple TV: iTunes library is found but devices can't connect with it.

I already tried to solve the problem with the suggestions on Apples troubleshooting page:  Fehlerbehebungsmaßnahmen für die Privatfreigabe

My setup:

  • Mac Pro (2008) with OS X 10.10 (14A389), iTunes 12.0.1.26, connected via Ethernet and WiFi
  • Router: Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7270
  • iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1
  • iPad 2 with 8.1
  • Apple TV (3rd Gen), newest software update, connected via Ethernet

 

Any ideas, what the reason for that problem could be and how to solve it?

    I have 1500 songs on source iTunes with sharing on but target iTunes on another Mac only showed the 27 songs I had bought on iTunes Store. Changing library name on target iTunes did the trick.

    Home sharing has been eliminated. See this message from an Apple tech that got minutes ago. We spent 30 minutes trying to find the problem, then she asked her supervisors and here's what she said:

     

    "I did some research and Home Sharing has been removed from the Music app on iOS 8.4. I understand that Home Sharing was a feature that you enjoyed using in the Music app on iOS, and would like to know more about why it was removed. Apple is always evaluating the features we offer in our software in order to provide the best performance and experience for all of our customers. Home Sharing was removed from Music in iOS 8.4 as a part of this ongoing effort.     Apple has discontinued Music Home sharing since iTunes 12.2.1 => Share your iTunes library over your home network - Apple Support

    Don't accidentally believe this anything but 'encouragement' to subscribe to newly launched 'Apple Music' at at least USD/EUR 9,99 per month!

     

    You can still stream Video content locally on your wireless home network though with iTunes and iOS Videos App on iOS devices.

    See posts above. Home Sharing has been eliminated in the latest versions of IOS. It may return later (again, see post above) but if you are running IOS 8.4, it is gone.

    That sounds right, but I also had to unplug the AppleTV for a few minutes. Now it works. (Lion on macbook + Apple TV 2)

    After spending several hours over the past week changin

    -Inernet Protocol Iv6, Off

    -Windows 7 Fix-It host issues

    -De-Authorize/Re-Authorize all computers

    -Change Computer name

    -Run iTunes as Administrator

    -Go thru the definition of ports

    ...

     

    I found the simplest fix, detailed instructions how to turn on Home Sharing of Music in iTunes12 (see link below)

    In iTunes 12 to turn on home sharing of music you need to Tap 'Artist' then 'Home Sharing'

    Am I missing something or is this is incredibly NOT intuitive.

    I had this problem also and below is how I fixed it by accident.

     

    On your iPad/iPhone go to

         Settings

            iTunes & App Store

              Enable - Automatic Downloads   (Turn ON)

                   Music

                   Apps

                  (or the options you want )

    Apple-ID_thumb.jpg

    If Music is not enabled then you will not see the Home Shared music on your devices

     

    Once this is done, go to the Music App on your iPhone/iPad and select "Artists" or what ever categories is shown.

    Then you will see a popup and one of the options at the bottom will be "Home Sharing"

    When you select "Home Sharing" you will see the libraries that are available to you.

    Select the Mac Music library and you are all set.

    Tried all sorts to fix this and eventually found a really simple solution. On the Mac, you have to use the file menu In iTunes to enable home sharing NOT the settings menu. That worked instantly.

     

    If you enable home sharing via the settings menu, it says home sharing is working but has no connections, but it isn't working. Doing it with the file menu drop down does work.

    I have the same issue... doesn't happen all the time but will just cut out.. I have a fritzbox too and nothing has a issues with wifi. The last time (today) it happened 8 times in 5 mins, the only way to sort it was to restart the apple tv. I hope Apple come up with a permanent solution, cause its annoying.

    same issues with iTunes home sharing. ATV4 is saying i need to turn home sharing on. its on everything is double checked. mac, iTunes, iPhone ATV all up to date. but i can't get it to work

    I still own the first Touch and as a professional I was tolerant about the incredible

    fuss required to acquire, manage, share  sync etc, and the frequent crashes

    destroying  hours of  work. The glacial loading of the store, and the staying up all

    night to make sure a movie downloaded in one piece and the inscrutable gui.

    I have a more recent touch now.

    Luckily I never get down new ios unless it promises eternal life, because I know

    it will be weeks before my life comes back. I see on this thread I would have lost

    home sharing which is the core of my home system.

    So I say itunes is not a media utility - it is a career, hobby, avocation and private ****.

    You have to be like you guys who seem to enjoy jumping through flaming hoops all the time.

    I now have a Fire and everything just takes place by magic.  Like, if you get a new

    one, you sign in and voila!  your life is back in minutes!  If you do hook up to a pc to pick up some files

    it appears as a normal disk and you send stuff in the usual windows fashion. No screwed up bloated sw.

    This used to take days  and ship loads of adult language on ios when for example your pc quilts.

    The only other soft I have used which come even slightly close was that windows live

    mail which had the most opaque counter intuitive screw up of a gui ever.
