my macbook pro has been running slow for quite some time

Hello, my MacBook Pro has been running slow for quite some time now and it's frustrating. 😠 I hope you'll be able to help me. I've read this thread and figured out I should open a new one, so here it is. 😊

I've already downloaded Etrechech and ran it and this is what I got:

A couple of quick suggestions.

It looks like you accidentally installed Genieo adware and have attempted to remove it, but there I can see at least one file remains. Run the AdwareMedic tool developed by a colleague of mine who is one of the malware gurus here in the forum, for the safest most effective means of identifying all currently known adware and optionally removing it for you.

I see you are not using Time Machine, so I hope you have some other backup strategy in use. All hard drives will fail, usually around the three year point which is probably about where yours is.

Other than that, just make sure you recognize all the software you see in the report, that you still use it all and that it is up-to-date. If you see anything that needs to be removed, consult the developer's web site for uninstall instructions rather than trying to just trash the app.

Hi Shiny,

Yes Mad is correct the Genieo malware must go. Use AdwareMedic tool of Thomas Reed.

Then in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems take all entries out with the minus sign underneath: this wil avoid having these running all the time, use these apps by starting them manually when you need them and after use Quit them (from the menu).

Then open the Java applet and disable Java. Close the applet.

Now restart the Mac.

Then download the Mavericks Combo update, and install it: this is a package of all updates, running this is better than just updating to 10.9.5, because this is refreshing all updates.

Then update the Flasplayer.

I am not familiar with the OctoshapeWeb plugin and the ViewRightWebPlayer plugin. Maybe someone will give a comment on these.

Now in Finder go to MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchAgents and delete com.hp.help.tocgenerator.plist.

Restart.

Right, sorry. I'm new at this stuff and I got confused. Here's the list:

some comments (in haste):

1. BBedit is no longer installed, and there is a leftover (it is probably not causing issues but you better clean it):

in Finder go to MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchDaemons and delete com.barebones.authd.plist

2. there are two: Cloud and CloudApp. Sort it out or uninstall.

3. You also have Textwrangler and Emacs, make a choice, I would prefer to keep Textwrangler, but maybe you don't need any.

4. Uninstall Google Chrome, unsafe and a resource eater. When you want a browser besides Safari keep Firefox or uninstall Firefox and install Opera: both safe and FAST. Do not run two browsers at the same time, Quit the one you do not use.

5. I doubt that you need iProcrastinate.

--- a general remark: do not download software from sites as Softonic, Download.com, and so on: not safe anymore, read TheSafeMac.com.

6. You do not need iZip, the built in is as good, if you want more filetypes to read: Appstore: The Unarchiver.

7. Same for RailsinstallerOSX-Uninstaller ??

8. You have so many Text apps, do you really need them? If not, make a choice.

9. ToggglDesktop? mmmm.

10. uTorrent: this app is not really careful with your data and broadcasts what you want to keep to yourself.. ..Apps that are downloaded with it are untrustworthy, and you better uninstall them, because they may be compromised. So I strongly advise to uninstall it and the apps so downloaded.

-----a second general remark: it is good to uninstall apps that you tried and looked at, but do not necessarely keep.

11. Do you have a HP printer?

I may have forgotten some,

Lex
