Q: Will Apple pay support American express SERVE card?

On the chart it says it supports American express prepaid so American Express just came out about 1yr or less ago of there only prepaid debt card. So the apple pay chart has a **** check on the American express prepaid so why is it not working?

Ya Maybe Apple should take that check off of prepaid on chart then. Becuase there is a check mark for American express and Chase bank prepaid. That would help. But thanks for your respond. I'll just open a bank account then

I just have the temporary card right now and I tried it and it didnt work. I also called American Express I think I spoke with someone that had no idea what I was talking about but she said that they are working on it but as of now it does not work. When I get my real card in a few days I will try again

I just called American Express Serve and the guy on the line said it should be supported .... Something is strange.

Can someone from Apple please tell me if the issue is on Apple's end or on the American Express end and if I should expect it soon or ... maybe they aren't sure.  The lack of consistent information is a little confusing.  (Mine is not the temporary card ... its the full serve card with my name on it etc.)

    Thank you for your time.

I read in the current documents

2General purpose reloadable cards from the Visa, Mastercard, and American Express payment networks. Doesn't include merchant gift cards or other non-network gift cards.

and American Express told me the Serve card should work ... yet its getting rejected ..... Any Apple folks want to weigh in to help me on this one?

I called them for a close friend of mine who couldn't get it to work. A Serve representative said what seems like a reading off a script, that they are working on including Serve for Apple Pay very soon but there's no exact ETA. Card holders will be getting an email shortly of Apple Pay participation and instruction.

I Just found this on the American Express website.

American Express Terms of Use for Apple Pay

An "eligible American Express Card" means an American Express U.S. Consumer or Small Business credit or charge Card that is not cancelled and that is issued to you by a U.S. banking subsidiary of American Express. Prepaid cards and products and American Express Corporate Cards are not eligible. For American Express-branded cards issued by other financial institutions, please contact your issuer to see if they participate in Apple Pay. of Apple Inc.

I don't like this since I got the Serve card just to use it with Apple Pay. Here is the website that I got this from.

    Screenshot 2014-12-17 09.28.39.png

I hope add support soon you can download the softbank/softcard app and add the Serve card on there but for iPhone need a special case and don't make the case for iPhone 6/6+ so really mainly only available for Android phones...

When they first released the chart there was a check mark in the prepaid slot for American Express  They have changed it since its initial release.

Pre paid cards are not accepted. Must be a credit or debit card.

Technically, prepaid cards have nothing to do with it, as Apple has said (and you have quoted) "Apple Pay works with most of the major credit and debit cards  from the top US banks"

A "prepaid" card, by definition, is a card you purchase, typically with cash, to prepay for a service or product (similar to a gift card), for example, Xbox Live cards, Nintendo points cards, iTunes card, etc, a prepaid card you would use for purchasing for products and services similar to a credit or debit card would require to be on a credit and/or debit network (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, STAR, Discover, Diners Club, etc.)

The American Express SERVE card is a Prepaid CREDIT/DEBIT card, key word here is debit, prepaid or not, it works in an ATM and thus counts as a debit card (therefore Apple CAN support it on Apple Pay)

The reason why Apple doesn't support SERVE cards is actually the fault of American Express, It was American Express' decision, they chose not to offer Apple Pay support for their SERVE card, or possibly, being that AMEX is a card issuer and not a bank, maybe they don't have the authority to offer support for Apple Pay, either way, the AMEX SERVE card, while prepaid, is still a debit/credit card, and Apple can't deny Apple Pay support on the SERVE card simply because it is prepaid
