Yosemite colour printing on Ricoh MOC4000 broken?

If your Ricoh printer does not have PostScript and you were printing in color, my guess is that you were using the pxlmono/pxlcolor drivers from OpenPrinting. If that is the case, make sure that you have your printer set to use the appropriate driver. Then apply the patch I posted at Ricoh MP C2500 not printing after upgrading to Yosemite This should allow you to print in color again.

Thank you first of all for all your time and expertise you have already given. If you can spare a moment I would greatly appreciate your advice.

I have a new Ricoh C5503 printer & a Mac running Yosemite.

Steps I have taken ....

ONE

Printer is on a local network - can see and ping the static IP address no problem.

Add a printer and use the recommended PS driver / but NO Postscript card in the Ricoh - so just get the job listed as 'data error' on the Printers error log.

TWO

Installed Guten driver - and can print in Hi Res grayscale - this is good, but not colour.

THREE

Found this thread and carefully read through all the posts.

Have installed the fomatic / ghostscript / pxlmon/color - dmg >> all with Success.

Have run the yosemite.commad script >> printer found / passwrd entered >> BUT it does not say 'modified' on the Kind (However I noted your later post - saying that Ricoh dont have 'recommend so its fine."

PROGRESS made though becuse it now comes up with PXL, and also in my printing options I can see 'Color as an option'

BUT the printer fails with 'filter' message.

FOUR

sudo nano /etc/cups/cups-files.conf

ADDED - "Sandboxing Relaxed" - without the quotes

PROGRESS again - but it now just 'hangs' on 'printing' for 50 minutes and counting........

If you or any of the other kind people on this thread can help I would be very grateful.

I have quoted non-continuous sections of the error log above. It would appear that you are "hoist by your own petards".

The pxlmono/pxlcolor package from OpenPrinting does not contain a PPD (driver) for the Ricoh MP C5503 printer. I highly suspect that you obtained it at http://openprinting.org/printer/Ricoh/Ricoh-MP_C5503. To verify this, pleas open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities) and enter the following command in the window that appears and post the output in a reply --

head -n 100 /private/etc/cups/ppd/_192_168_1_81___pxl_.ppd

If you did get the PPD from the OpenPrinting database for the MP C5503 you will have to change the line

*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-pdf 0 foomatic-rip"

to

*%cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-pdf 0 foomatic-rip"

After that, delete you old queue and add a new queue with the modified PPD. You must then apply the Yosemite patch.

I then tried to ADD the printer using:

The IPP - one displayed printer tray information.

Two related questions:

Can you print Grayscale? Is the printer set up to use User Codes for color printing?

On a wild hunch, what happens if you add more paper to the tray? I see that it is reporting that it is low on paper.

I would stick with lpd or HP JetDirect protocols for now. Once you get one of those working you can try IPP again.

Would not let me print in grayscale either.

Yes the printer is set up to print with a code. (BUT when I had Gutenberg installed - it printed in grayscale without needing the code).

Tried adding the paper.

Noted about sticking to LPD.

Just reinstalled everything frim scratch and still same situation.

The job sends - no erros in error.log / all good 'successful in access.log.

Printer fires up and whirls away but then just dies off - BUT it is actually registering as an ERR on the printer log - but with no time stamp or job details.

Thinking it might now be wanting a CODE - dont suppose you know how I send that to it do you???

ALSO - the printer is now registering with an exclamation mark in settings.

Remember to make these changes to the source PPD that already has the

*%cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-pdf 0 foomatic-rip" line. After you make the changes, delete your old printer and go through the whole process of setting up a new queue with the PPD that has you User Code. Don't forget to apply the patch for Yosemite.

The purpose of the % character is to comment out or disable those directives.

I would suspect you are getting the exclamation mark in the print window because your queue has an error on at the printer and it won't let you print anymore.
