Buying an iPad Refurb for use on T-Mobile's network?

Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if I could buy an iPad Refurb from the Refurbished store and be able to take it into T-Mobile to add an internet connection/cellular service on their network. I see all the Refurbs are all listed at Verizon, AT&T or Sprint... no T-Mobile. Does that really make a difference or would the Refurb have to absolutely be made specifically for T-Mobile? I'm not sure how the sim card situation works with iPads.

Any info on this topic wold be appreciated!

Why not buy a T-Mobile refurb?

What model are you looking at? 2, 3 retina, air? Mini?

Below is the information on what frequencies it uses in the different bands. For example, if the iPad you are looking at supports 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz frequencies of G4 LTE, then it will work on T-Mobiles network.

The 2012 Verizon iPad would also work on ATT on some bands/freqencies as macrumors indicated:

Verizon iPad does indeed work on AT&T's network when equipped with an AT&T micro-SIM and the device's carrier settings are updated to support connecting to AT&T.

Big question on everyone's mind buying the Verizon iPad was whether data from AT&Ts 3G network would work on this iPad, or if Verizon/Apple would block this.

I was one of the first to obtain a Verizon iPad and can happily confirm that this is allowed! I used my ATT iPhone 4S sim card and took out the Verizon sim, and data worked! You must apply the AT&T APN carrier settings before this works though.

It is important to note, however, that a Verizon iPad will be limited to non-LTE bands (EDGE, 3G, HSPA+ 4G) on AT&T. The Verizon iPad hardware supports only the 700 MHz band for LTE to match the carrier's technology, while the GSM version sold for use on AT&T's network supports both the 700 MHz and 2100 MHz bands as used by that carrier.

Hi James,

Thanks for the quick response! I'd get a T-Mobile refurb if one were available. I'm getting this for my Grandmother who, at 88, discovered my iPad recently and fell in love with it. So it doesn't have to be the best-of-the-best type of iPad... just something that would be suitable for her to download and read books, browse the web and play games. A good friend of mine is a manager at a T-Mobile location and he's going to put whatever I buy on T-Mobiles network for me for only $10 a month. He said any iPad will work... but I want to be sure. Especially with older models. Based on the information you provided, it looks like the one I'm eyeing will work (a third gen with plenty of storage). Maybe you could take a look and let me know for sure:

Thanks again for your detailed response! It's appreciated.

She lives in downtown Baltimore so I'm assuming her T-Mobile reception will be great. I work down there often and always have a strong signal. Actually, the only time my signal gets weak is if I'm out in the boon-docks and, even then, I can still make phone calls. I was in the mountains of MD last weekend and still had a signal. Not too shabby. Ironically, I just switched over to T-Mobile from Verizon. For two lines and only 1GB of shared data I was spending $130 a month with Verizon. I switched to T-Mobile and got a plan for four people (added my parents) with 10GB of shared data for $100 a month. If we add more people it's $10 per. To add an iPad to the account, it's only $10 more per month AND it'll get 10GB of it's own data to use. I've really had no problems with their network (knock on wood) and it's been a really pleasant experience so far. I paid for new iPhone 6 pluses outright for my wife and I after a trade-in of our old 5s phones.

Thanks again for your help! I'm going to buy that iPad.
