Q: instant personal hotspot not working with iphone 6 on ios 8.1

on my mac, i am not able to see iphone 6 for personal hotspot connection like i can see my ipad mini, both running on ios 8.1 my mac is on yosemite. i still have to connect to my iphone in the old way for personal hotspot.

any help?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 13 inch, i5, 256 GB SSD, 2013

Is Bluetooth turned on, on both iPhone and Mac? I had been having issues and only yesterday realized that BT was off on my Macbook. Flipped BT on and it worked within about 30 secs.

thanks jeffd55 but none of that worked for me. i guess i am gonna considering starting with a fresh install.
