Multiple GeForce GT 120 Graphics cards on Mac Pro

I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 Quadcore 2.66GHz running OS 10.6.8, with the factory-supplied NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 Graphics card (in PCIe Slot 1), connected to a Lacie Photon19vision Monitor (via VGA thru MiniDisplayPort adaptor) and a 30" Apple Cinema Display (via Dual-link DVI) - this has been working perfectly for years.

I have just got a 2nd GeForce GT 120 from eBay to utilise a 2nd Lacie Photon19Vision Monitor as a 3rd display via this 2nd NVIDIA card, which I installed in PCIe Slot 2. Both this 2nd card and this 3rd display are recognised in System Profiler, but I am unable to get a visible signal through to the display. I have tried the following connections:

VGA (monitor) - VGA/MiniDisplayPort Adapter (card)

DVI (Monitor) - DVI (card

DVI (monitor) - DVI/MiniDisplayPort Adapter (card)

None of these have worked.

Any advice on using more than 1 GeForce GT 120 graphics card in the Mac Pro, and/or the best connection configuration?

Many thanks in advance!

There use to - and still may be an issue - but I think it was in Snow Leopard - using two GT120s

Snow Leopard is not supported with security updates and patches or updates like to Safari, only Mountain Lion and above.

PC cards and video out ports are always tricky as to which ports will work, and sometimes flashing can alter that.

One ATI 5770 supports 3 displays. You could use GT120 and something else. Had to posted here? read threads, looked for ideas ahead of buying.

PC cards will not have any video out until the drivers are loaded after login so you can't see what is happening, but the OEM GT120 monitor can.

Thanks The hatter

I checked the documentation for my model which said it was fine to do "Multiple graphics card configurations available with two, three, or four NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 cards" (Mac Pro (Early 2009) - Technical Specifications), perhaps I've been a little naive, but have to say I haven't managed to find any other information online on this particular problem.

The original card is still working fine, so I don't see how it could be a driver issue (I downloaded an update to check but no improvement) - this is further confused by the fact that both cards and all monitors are recognised but no joy with viewing on the 3rd monitor :-(

Flummoxed.

The hatter is right that at one point, multiple NVIDIA cards caused a problem. But that problem was Kernel Panics, not failure to operate.

You need to be certain the new card works by itself. To do that, install it in slot 1 as the only card, and be certain all the old functions work as you expect. Then you have known-good parts going forward into more complex testing.

When using multiple display, you must be certain you have completely eliminated Mirroring, which will limit resolutions to those that seem to be possible for both displays. You should have a separate blue box for each display, and none should overlap.
