Q: OSX Yosemite Text Message Forwarding/SMS Auto-canceling

I am on an early 2011 Macbook Pro, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB memory, 203.88GB storage free out of 318.84GB. I updated to from Mavericks to OS X Yosemite. I've also updated my iPhone 5 to 8.1, along with my iPad mini to 8.1. I had no problems activating the "text message forwarding" on iMessage between my iPad and my iPhone.

When attempting to set up text messaging forwarding between the Macbook Pro and the iPhone, it keeps canceling itself. I'm toggling the Macbook Pro switch on the iPhone, the activation code pops on the Macbook Pro, but when I enter the code on the iPhone, two things happen: 1). on the iPhone, the toggle switch flips back to "off" as soon as I punch in the code, and 2). on the Macbook Pro, an error message reading, 'Text message forwarding setup was canceled. You can turn this on later in Messages settings on your iPhone." pops up.

I've tried restarting everything on both the iPhone and the Macbook Pro, turning on and off messages on my iPhone, closing and reopening Messages on the Macbook Pro, signing in and out of my account on Messages on the Macbook Pro, and making sure that the 'send and receive' on the iPhone has the appropriate accounts checked off (as well as in Messages on the Macbook Pro). Bluetooth is turn on in both the iPhone and Macbook Pro.

I've seen that some folks are having issues even seeing an activation code, but I'm seeing the code. It just keep canceling itself.

Is anyone else experiencing this, or does anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate any help or feedback, I'm a bit at a loss.

Thank you so much!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I had this problem, too, and I fought with it for the longest time... and then I decided to turn off my phone for a few minutes. When it powered back on... POOF! Perfection. Try that. Hope it helps.

Thank you - I'll leave my phone off for a few minutes and see if that helps.

Woefully, still having the same issues. Thanks for the feedback, though.

I have the exact same issue :

When attempting to set up text messaging forwarding between the Macbook Pro and the iPhone, it keeps canceling itself. I'm toggling the Macbook Pro switch on the iPhone, the activation code pops on the Macbook Pro, but when I enter the code on the iPhone, two things happen: 1). on the iPhone, the toggle switch flips back to "off" as soon as I punch in the code, and 2). on the Macbook Pro, an error message reading, 'Text message forwarding setup was canceled. So far I tried to reboot both iPhone and MBA, then log out / login. Nothing changed. Anybody else has the same issue ?

    Thanks for helping

Hey MarRydz, What did you do to solve your problem ?

    Just that ?

    1. switch off phone
    2. remove my iclouds account from the Messages app settings
    3. restart computer
    4. add my account to the Messages app setting
    5. try again

If so, I didn"t work for me so far

    Anybody, please ?

Thank you for all of the suggestions. As an update: the automatic toggling off on the iPhone, and the automatic canceling on the Macbook Pro were never resolved, and yet I am somehow receiving phone calls and messages on my Macbook Pro anyway. The text forwarding remains in the 'off' position on my iPhone, and yet I am receiving the information.

I ended up logging out of my apple account EVERYWHERE - in messages, app store, iTunes, the phone itself, etc. on both devices. Yes, it took hours. Yes, it eventually worked. I also had a longer period of time (about an hour) when my phone was off, which happened to coincide with logging out of everything on my macbook. So I'm not really sure what made it work, but in the end it does. I hope this helps, good luck!

Here's the solution that worked for me: on the iphone, turn iMessage off, then on again and from "send & receive" set "start new conversations from" >> yr cell number, not any of your email addresses.

Then re-try to enable "text message forwarding" >> on your of all devices, and it should work!

    Enjoy!

I tried repeatedly to Add a Mac and an iPad to allow iMessage to Send & Receive messages with my phone number, but the System indicated the change was "Cancelled" repeatedly. I discovered that on my Mac, I had four accounts enabled in iMessage (phone and three email accounts), but only two accounts were enabled on my phone (phone and one email account). I unchecked the two extra email accounts, and made sure both devices were set up the same "Start New Conversations..." account.  When I tried to add the Mac again, as someone said before, "poof!" -- It worked without restarting either device.  Details for checking your settings below.

Mac iMessage account settings:  Open iMessage  > Messages (next to Apple icon on menu bar) > Preferences > Accounts

    1. You must use the the same Apple ID on both devices. This sounds like a no-brainer, but when I set up iMessages initially, my iCloud email address was filled in by default, which isn't the same as my Apple ID.

    2. Be sure "Enable this Account" is checked

    3. You Can Be Reached.... Check that your phone number (and any email accounts you want to use) are checked, but nothing else

    4. Start New Conversations from:  (verify correct account - to keep conversations in the same thread between devices, use the same account)

iOS 8 iMessage account settings:  Settings > Messages > Send & Receive

    1. You Can Be Reached.... Check that the same accounts are checked, but nothing else

    4. Start New Conversations from:  (verify correct account - to keep conversations in the same thread between devices, use the same account)

NOTE: When I first added my phone number as the primary account in iMessage, it appeared on the account list but was not checked off, and was not recognized on Mac or iPad either. I did a hard reset (Hold power button on top and Home button until device powers off.) When it powered back on, I had the ability to check/uncheck my phone number in iMessage. Phone numbers in iOS 8 are always grayed out because it can't be changed. It is determined by the number registered to the device (so I don't think you can add a Google Voice number, for example.)

Another lesson learned: iMessage didn't work at all because I had Date & Time set correctly, but Manual. It has to be Automatic.

    Good Luck!

    Hello..

Removed all other mailadresses than my appleID on iphone. In Messages/preferences(mac) they disappeared.  Turned on "message forwarding"  on iphone  again, and the code finally worked(The one that auto cancelled all time).. ouch that was a struggle.Tried everything else. now... happy me. this is a really nice feature when it is working.
