Netflix display error with Safari 8/OSX 10.10 Yosemite

I am having an issue with playing Netflix content through Safari since upgrading to Yosemite. Specifically, Netflix will start to play the content and then display an error after a few seconds. The error reads "Whoops, something went wrong... display error. There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirror using airplay."


My monitor is HDCP compliant (HP ZR30W) and it's the only monitor connected to my 2014 MacPro. I presume this is an issue with the latest version of Safari and all the next extensions Apple added to support Netflix streaming without the Silverlight plugin.


Anyone have a solution for this or seen the same problem? The new Safari is crazy-fast and I'd prefer to use it with Netflix. Hate bailing to Chrome.

So, I just got a software update, and don't want to get everyone too excited, but I think this got fixed. Finally. I've been watching Netflix on Safari for at least an hour with no hiccups (I had been getting error codes every five minutes), and hopefully this is the patch that's been developed to fix the HTML5 error.... I'm crossing my fingers...

Hi all, is anyone else having an issue getting HD on Safari 8? I've just purchased a new macbook air and updated it to 10.10.3.


I don't see the HD icon, and I can't select a bitrate higher than 1750 in the ctrl+alt+shift+S settings. My software/hardware/internet is all sufficient to stream HD. I see that some other user are having this issue. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1869354

So, the update seems to be working pretty well, with minimal interruptions. The only issue I seem to be having is that Netflix takes forever to load after I wake the Macbook from sleep. All my other websites are fine. It just seems to be Netflix. But at least I can watch movies now. Also, for informational purposes, the "HD" icon that sqadir88 was referring to hasn't been available for quite some time that I'm aware of. At least since I upgraded to HTLM5, the HD icon went away. I'm not sure how to fix the bitrate, though.

I have this problem as well. I get the HDCP error from Netflix in Safari (8.0.6) on OS X (10.10.3) when connected to my single external display (LG 24MP56). If I open Firefox, Netflix works without any error.


I have this issue on my 2012 MacBook Air as well as my 2014 MBPr. I don't have DisplayLink installed, I don't use AirPlay, and I only have one external display attached.


Sadly, it appears that the solution to this problem with Safari is to use Firefox or Chrome... But I would love to find a fix for this!

Do let me say thank you, sir.

I followed you example and downloaded Firefox.

Netflix now plays flawlessly.

But it won't play in Safari.

I have a 5K iMac fully loaded.

I use my 20" Cinema display from 2006 as my 2nd monitor.

This set up works in everything else except Netflix.

Your suggestion of using Firefox to access Netflix solved the problem.

I think I know why.

Apple wants you to watch movies from Apple Store, not from Netflix.

That's probably why nobody from Apple is taking part in the discussion.

They don't want anyone to know.

What can I say?


Again, thank you. No, I watch my Netflix on the Apple TV.

But when I am surfing the net, and run into a movie I want to check out, that's when being able to do that at the computer becomes a meaningful utilization of the equipment.


It's sad.

I think our issue is with the last part of the sentence: "and is not mirrored using Airplay."


The conjunction "and" may explain the problem.


"HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection, a copy protection scheme to eliminate the possibility of intercepting digital data midstream between the source to the display. The format designed by Intel and licensed by Digital Content Protection, LLC using an authentication and key exchange procedure before video and audio is presented." https://www.digitalconnection.com/FAQ/HDTV_12.asp


Which means, in my case, I cannot access Netflix via wifi.

Yup, so basically this is not a technical, but rather a copyright issue. Netflix and Apple does not want you to record the video and then distribute it outside of their content delivery network.


As for the rant part it is rather annoying: Legit users will suffer because of this -- I cannot even watch a Netflix film on the MacBook Pro's *internal* display if at the same time I have an external display attached. I am not sure if this would stop professional pirates to copy the content, but for sure it makes my life more difficult -- Hey, I am paying for this service, why do you guys punish me instead of the bad guys?

You are spot on Jan. That's the good news, now for the bad news. Apple knows what the problem is. I can't tell you how I know this but I know it and I got it from the horses mouth. (Sorry if I make any typos, I'm just getting over shingles of the eye and having a difficult time reading and typing.) Let me start over.


First, there is no single work around that works for every Mac config. None of the 'fixes' work for me. I use Chrome, which does work.

Apple is well aware of this problem and has been for at least a year. But the solution is not a simple bug fix. It's as much political as it is technical.


Anyone else having issues with iTunes? 🙂

Not true, this is a bug. For me it occurs in two instances, if the DisplayLink driver is present (even if I am not using a DisplayLink display), and/or if AirServer is running (even if I am not currently AirPlaying anything). If I remove DisplayLink and quit AirServer, Netflix works just fine in Safari. The question is, why is the mere presence of these third-party items an issue. I understand that DisplayLink does not support HDCP, and HDCP is purposely disabled via AirPlay for copy-protection, but if I am not actually using either at the time, I don't understand what trips the issue in Safari that doesn't happen in Chrome or Firefox. But I know it isn't Apple trying to screw Netflix users.
