Q: Notifications sent to discontinued Apple ID address

This is a question about my Apple ID so I hope this is the right place.

I’ve been using my Apple ID for several years and now have an iCloud email address.  I’m thinking of discontinuing my ISP's email account that I am presently using for my Apple ID.  That email address is the one that Apple uses to send me notifications about my account.  I understand that I can’t change my Apple ID to my iCloud address, so, I will have to keep my present ISP email address as my Apple ID.  Bummer.

Where do I make the change in my Apple ID account to have Apple send those notifications to my iCloud address since the Apple ID address will be dead?

    Hello plcmms,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

You are able to change your Apple ID email address.  Simply follow the directions below to do so.

In most cases, your Apple ID is also the primary email address of your Apple ID account. You can change your Apple ID to any address, except an address used by another Apple ID. You can change the address of any Apple ID, except an Apple ID that ends with @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com.

    1. Sign out of iCloud, the iTunes Store, App Store, FaceTime, Find My Friends, Find My iPhone, and iMessage on each device that uses your current Apple ID for these services.
    1. Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
    1. Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in. Forgot your password?
    1. Select Edit next to “Apple ID and Primary Email Address.”
    1. Enter the email address to use as your Apple ID, then select Save Changes. Apple will send a verification email to that address.
    1. Open the email from Apple, then click Verify Now in the email. Didn't receive the email?
    1. When the My Apple ID page opens, sign in with your renamed Apple ID.
    1. When you see a message that verification is complete, you can begin using your renamed Apple ID. You should also update the features and services that you use with Apple ID.

    Change your Apple ID

To change the email which you receive Apple notifications with, follow the directions below.

    Notification email address

A notification address is automatically added to your account in certain circumstances:

    • If you have a rescue address and turn on two-step verification, that address automatically becomes your notification address. With two-step verification, you don't need a rescue address.
    • If you provide an email address with your shipping information when you purchase from the Apple Online Store, that address automatically becomes your notification address.

Your primary address receives a copy of all Apple ID email that Apple sends to your notification address.

    1. Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
    2. Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in.
    3. Edit a notification address:
      • Select Edit next to the address, then enter the new address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
      • Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address.
    4. Delete a notification address: Select Delete next to the address.

Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses

    Take care,

    Alex H.

Thanks very much for the reply, Alex_h1

The second part of your reply is the part relevant to my question.  It looks like the primary email address is what I will need to change to continue to get Apple's email notifications.  So, I went to Manage My Apple ID I selected "Name, ID and Email Addresses", then I click on Edit for "Apple ID and Primary Email Address".  When I put in my iCloud email address the pop up "Apple ID must:" notice window has in red "Not use a domain owned by Apple" and I am unable to use my iCloud email account.

So, the question remains -- Where do I put my iCloud email address in order to continue getting Apple email notifications.

I'm getting a little confused now, but, OK.  Not sure where to go but I'll try something other than iCloud.com.

Thanks for trying to help anyway.
