Yosemite Safari won't let me delete/change passwords

I have upgraded to Yosemite. I found that I could not log into this site as the stored password/ID for this site that was restored from my time machine backup was old and needed to be corrected. I went into preferences on Safari and figured it would be a simple thing to just delete the old password and create a new entry the next time I logged in. Going to the preference page however, I find that I cannot delete this or any other password that has been stored. My guess is that there is some file where these are stored in and at the moment, for some bizzar reason, I don't have write permissions to this file. If knew where the specific file that stores this data is located I could just open up terminal and do a quick chmod on the permissions and I'm guessing that would fix things but I have no idea where this would be. I'm more than comfortable with Linux but I really don't mess around much in the bowels of OSX so if someone could kindly point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Hi..

Open Keychain Access located in HD > Applications > Utilities

Select Passwords on the left.

Now type: IDMSA in the search field top right corner of the Keychain Access Window.

Then right or control click the idmsa.apple keychain then click Delete.

Back to Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Passwords tab.

Select: AutoFill user names and passwords

Quit and relaunch Safari.

Login with your Apple ID and password.

Click Yes when prompted to save that data to a new keychain.

How do you reset it for just iMessage and not completely reset my Apple ID password? I see the button for "Forgot Password?" but I've been reluctant to change it as it is tied up to so many devices. What is strange on this one is I log in with my ID that is <username@me.com> and it rejects it. If I login with <username@icloud.com> I can see the dialog box actually change and accept the password. About 1 second later it rejects it, the dialog box changes back and rejects everything.

If changing my Apple ID password fixes all of this then I will do that. I just want to be sure before I embark down that path because, as you know, with even a few machines and devices, it's logging in all over again.

Just for completeness I posted this answer on another post to the specific iMessage question:

Ok, so I did find on another post somewhere that if you do the following it works:

1) Reset the PRAM -> boot up holding P-R-Opt-Cmd

2) Follow the PRAM boot with a Safe Mode Boot - Hold down Shift on the second boot.

Open up iMessage and log in. I have NO idea what in the world is going on but this works. At least it did for me. I followed the two boots above with a reboot and now I can log into iMessage with my proper Apple ID.
