JAVA MACBOOK PRO

I am having problems with websites that are using JAVA Applets. I get the the "coffee cup" symbol, but that is it. I have been unable to figure this out. Is there a setting or a download I need?

macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Have you installed/updated to the latest version of Java ?

In your browser Preferences is Java enabled/allowed ?
