Setting up time capsule with sky broadband

I am on Sky broadband and currently have a Sky Fibre Hub connected to the BT openreach box. I also have the SKy on demand wifi box attached to my Sky+HD box that works v well connecting wirelessly to the Sky Fibre Hub.

I have just bought a shiny new AirPort Time Capsule that I want to use for my home wireless network, as a Time Machine back-up destination for my Mac and as a shared file server.

Please will you help me with the set-up? Should I remove and stop using the Sky Fibre Hub and connected the AirPort TC direct to the openreach box? If I do this is it possible for the On Demand wireless to still work? Or, do I need to keep the Sky Fibre Hub and connect the AirPort TC to this and change the settings so the Sky Fibre Hub wireless is switched off?

All help gratefully received!

I do not recognise in that listing what is the main router.. but whatever it is.. simply plug the TC into it by ethernet TC wan port.

Do the setup and make sure the TC goes into bridge mode.. ie on the network tab it shows bridge.

It is entirely up to you if you use wireless in the TC or simply use the other devices.. but the wireless should be off or create NOT EXTEND.

It is best though for clients who will use the TC for backup to connect directly to it.

As for using the TC for file sharing.. well it is not really suited to that task. For minor files that is fine..

Apple recommends you do not store your libraries on network drives.. particular iphoto where it is likely to be corrupted.

iphoto network no no.

It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

A TIme Capsule has no built in backup and no way for Time Machine to backup files.. so you put them at risk if you move files to the TC.

Hi

I use the same ISP as you do, you have two options

  1. remove the sky hub connect to the openreach box
    1. you will need to get the login details for sky from a website try the Sky help forum
    2. A reminder that you are breaking the terms of your contract with sky, as you have to keep their hub in place.
  2. Connect the TC to the sky hub via ethernet
    1. Put the TC in bridge mode using Airport Utility
    2. Change the wireless network name SSID to something simple for example TC 2Ghz and TC 5 GHz
    3. Set up Wireless password using WPA 2 Personal
    4. Restart TC for these changes to take effect
    5. Connect wirelessly to the TC and prove internet connectivity
    6. Go to the homepage of the sky hub 192.168.0.1
    7. enter the default user and password for the hub
    8. Turn off wireless

Simples

Hi LaPastenague

The sky hub is IMHO a very poor wireless device the Tower version of the TC is far superior having dual network capability and giving good coverage on the 5Ghz range providing that you leave it on automatic, I know that this is not your favourite option but Airport Utility only allows us in the EU to select channels 38 -48 manually and they transmit at a lower power output .

On demand is just a connection to a sky gateway somewhere and provided you are connected to the internet will work

You could be really clever and use the SSID from the sky Router and their password.

You must then turn off the wifi on the sky hub.

you then will not have to change the network details for your sky box if it connects wirelessly.

Just a word of caution I did this originally and found out that keeping the wireless SSID simple makes a big difference on the TC.

It only takes couple of seconds to change the box to the new network.

Do you mean that you connect the sky box directly to the sky hub or to the TC either will work.

hope that helps

Ok this is where I start to fumble a bit so need to check...

  1. Put the TC in bridge mode using Airport Utility
  2. Change the wireless network name SSID to something simple for example TC 2Ghz and TC 5 GHz (will I need to name two SSIDs?)
  9. Go to On Demand box set-up and change wireless destination to my new simple SSID that I entered under 2 above

?

Hi Ted

A quick update - Sky gave me the user ID and password for my sky hub and said it was fine for me to ditch it in favour of using the TC as my router. That's a big plus as one less flashing device on the window sill 🙂

My iMac arrives tomorrow and I have got Thursday booked out to do the install. The TC is sitting on the shelf waiting...

I think I have made a little mistake in that I have gone for a 512GB flash drive on the iMac but bought a 3TB TC. I can back-up my new iMac using the current system I have been using for ages namely two USB 1TB drives with one kept at the in-laws and swapped over every month.

So does that make my 3TB TC redundant? I need the extra space on my network as my current IMac is up to around 800GB. Should I rather use the TC as a straight file server and if I do, is it easy enough to back up that file server to another driver maybe using CCC?

Owain,

I would use the TC to back up my iMac, and every so often back up to one of those 1TB drives.

Using the TC as a file server is not simple as it was designed to be a backup device and works well doing that.

Getting rid of the sky router means that if you connect via Ethernet to devices on your network if possible they will connect at 1GHz, so you should have no problems, also I had a lag on my connection, which I resolve by putting my TC in the DMZ on my sky router then making my TC the router, the sky hub just converting the broadband to ethernet. I have a hard drive connected to the USB port of the TC, although it is only a USB 2 port I can stream videos HD from that with no buffering to my HD TV, using my MBA and apple TV. works really well. Sky on demand works really well.

Since using this set up for several months my TC keeps swapping the 2.4GHz frequencies due to neighbours WIFI but remains on one channel on the 5GHz range, even though I set it to automatic.

sorry to be a little rambling but hope it makes sense.

Hi Ted

Another update...

* I have set-up the new iMac - all working fine.

* The TC is set-up for wireless but have had to keep the Sky router for now. The reason is that the TC router is PPPoE while Sky is PPPoA. I have upgraded to Sky unlimited pro on a half-price deal to try a static IP address (there are three options on TC which are DHCP, Static & PPPoE). Will send an update if this works or not - Sky said I can downgrade no quibbles if it doesn't.

* I've plugged in a separate hard drive into the TC and that works fine but don't know what to use that for yet mainly because I am not sure how I am going to back-up that external drive - any ideas?

Hi

Just got off phone from Apple technical advisor and he assures me that TC TM back-ups will never overwrite other files / folders that aren't TM back-up files. So a shred folder set-up will be safe. But... if you want to expand the memory used by your shared folder, you may need to manullay delete old TM back-ups. There are ways to minimise the memory used for TM back-ups that I will look into.

On the Sky issue, I am not too sure, maybe I didn't do the set up properly. I will wait and see if a static IP address works. Sky uses ATM connections (don't know what that means) but that us PPPoA = PPPoE over ATM.

Hi Ted

You mentioned you stream HD videos from the drive attached to your TC. What about streaming direct from the TC?

Apple talked me through setting up a size limit for my TM back-ups and said to use the rest of the TC as a file server. It's working just fine for basic files but watching a home video is not working - it loads up but then you get the dreaded spinning wheel.

What set-up do you use? I don't know what MBA is.
