with a mac: I quit iTunes, deleted two files (iTunes.plist and gracenote.plist in Finder>Go>Library>User>'user name'>Preferences) and reinstalled the newest version of iTunes, restarted the computer and then when I opened iTunes it worked, but I too had to click Options>Get Track Names. Works for me!

For PC users, here is the solution I found: Go to "username"/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes
and delete the following files: CDinfo.cidb, com.apple.iTunes.Gracenote.plist, and iTunesPrefs.xml
Then re-install or repair iTunes.
Hi. With new OS just installed and new iTunes too, I'm still unable to use track title look up. And I cannot find these files. (gracenote.plist and iTunes.plist) I don't understand why my girlfriend account on the Mac can use Gracenote DB but not me on the same machine...
I tryed to reinstall iTunes. Didn't work.
Thanks.
Its reated to your user ID. You can make a new account, or you can try what I did: I quit iTunes, deleted two files (iTunes.plist and gracenote.plist in Finder>Go>Library>User>'user name'>Preferences) andreinstalled the newest version of iTunes, restarted the computer and then when I opened iTunes it worked!
I read this. But when I try, I just can't find these two files in Preferences on my macbook. Even with a search within all files, nothing.
I will now make a new user account to try that "solution"...
Thank you.
Open Finder, and at the top of the screen click the 'Go' menu item. While that drop down menu is open, hold down the 'alt/option' key and "Library' will appear as an option in the drop down. Click Library. THEN - go to User>'whatever your user nameis '>Preferences and the two files will be in that directory.
Thank you.
I already made a new user and I'm replacing all my stuff to the right place... (it solved the iTunes vs Gracenote problem)
But I'm new to MAC world... Is that "alt button trick" something I could use anywhere else to unlock special things? 🙂
Thanks again.
I'm new to Macs as well, so the only time Ive needed that 'hidden' library directory is to delete those files. Seems a lot of files are stored there though, including save files/profiles from old games or programs you've installed and then uninstalled in the past. Doesn't seem so bad to delete stuff like that
Hi, I tried to do this but when i typed in the file name it just opened itunes, couldn't find the files you said to delete anywhere. Am i looking in the wrong place?
See this thread: Re: itunes 12 track names not found and user not registered for online use.

Hi
Many thanks for this advice
I have had the same problem since upgrading, however by doing what you have said it has fixed the problem, and the CD track names now appear when downloading Cheers
I tried following the advice listed: quit iTunes, deleted two files (iTunes.plist and gracenote.plist in Finder>Go>Library>User>'user name'>Preferences) andreinstalled the newest version of iTunes, restarted the computer
but when i get to the Library folder there is no User folder to open. i tried opening ever folder to try and find it and there was nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The approach described below should address this issue for Windows users; some of the comments above appear to refer to OS X where some details, file locations, etc, may be different. In particular the reference to Finder>Go>Library>User>'user name'>Preferences is specific to OS X - the equivalent (approximately) location for Windows is C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes.
The ""not recognized for on-line use". error is associated with the Gracenote service that iTunes uses to look up and retrieve metadata for CDs. Some users have reported that this error occurs when trying to import from CD, subsequent to upgrading to version 12. A number of slightly different solutions have been reported (though all of a similar nature).
Try walking through the following steps - before starting you may have to enable hidden files and folders to be viewed - in Windows 7 / Windows Explorer select Organize > Folder and search options, then on theViewtab make sure thatShow hidden files, folders and drivesis selected. Without this you won't see theAppDatafolder inC:\Users\username\
If this doesn't work:
iTunesPrefs.xml
If this second procedure does work, you'll need to restore other iTunes preferences settings to those that you noted in step 1.
If this one didn't work:
Again, if this procedure does work, you'll need to restore other iTunes preferences settings to those that you noted in step 1 of the second procedure.
If you're still not able to retrieve CD info:
If none of these have worked (and almost everything I've seen suggests you should be OK by this point), you may have an issue with the installation and configuration of iTunes itself. If you have got this far, see turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for advice on how to remove and replace of all components of iTunes.
