Microsoft Word OS X Problem with Yosemite

I've been having this problem on my Mac for a while now. To work on a Debate Project in school, I have to open documents with Word. I expected this not to be a problem but when I try to open it up, it says exactly "Microsoft Word cannot be opened because of a problem." (Then in smaller font), "Check with the developer to make sure Microsoft Word works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple."

The current OS X software I am running is OS X Yosemite Version 10.10. The iMac I'm using it one is a 27-inch from Late 2009 and has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 4 GB 1067 MHZ DDR3 in Memory.

If you know even slightly anything to do about this, your input would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't think this is a Yosemite issue if you have been having it for a while. My instant guess would be that you may have more than one copy of Word on the Machine. I assume you can open Word and then use file open to open such files. If you are able to do that then search to see if you have an old copy of MS office on your machine that no longer works and bin it(don't bin the one that works).
