How do I override an administrator password? The previous administrator of my laptop is deceased, and I need to update my operating system.

What Mac OS X do you have? If it is one of the recovery HD OS X versions, restart holding the Command and R keys so you boot on the Recovery HD. From Utilities on the menu bar, select Terminal. When Terminal opens, type exactly:

resetpassword

and press Enter.

When the Resetpassword Window opens, select the hard drive, and the admin user, then type a new password twice, leave the Hint blank, and click Save. Accept the next dialog that opens, and then apply the reset home directory permissions, lower right of the window.

Go to the apple, left side of the menu bar, Reset and you will have a new admin password.
