Q: Sluggish/Jittery Magic Mouse after Yosemite

Since upgrading to Yosemite, my magic mouse is sluggish, sometimes unresponsive, and jitters across the screen. It's not like this all the time. It can go a day or so with no problems. Then, the problems start up. The only way to fix it is to go to a full restart and then just hope it doesn't happen again soon.

It's not a battery issue. It has new batteries installed. It's not a connectivity issue. It rarely if ever gets the "lose connectivity" issue anymore.

I'm running the 2012 15" rMBP and everything is fully up to date.

    Hi,

Could you please turn wifi off and see if your mouse connects?

Same issue here. No problems prior to installing Yosemite. I have a 2011 MBP, everything is working fine apart from a really slow / jittery magic mouse that will also disconnect every 10 seconds or so. Have tried 3 different mice, turning off WI-FI, resetting NVRAM, SMC, re-starting etc, will work after a restart for a while, then all go jumpy again.

Come on Apple, this is really basic broken functionality here that completely destroys the pleasure of using a premium computer with a slick OS !!

This actually explains what has been going on with my Macbook Pro mid 2012. As a designer, I prefer to use it in clamshell mode with my 24" Dell monitor. At first I thought it was a bad Magic Mouse. Different Magic Mouse did the same thing. Also, the Magic Trackpad started to show the same issues. USB mice / pen tablets didn't have the same problems, so I narrowed it to Bluetooth. I saw a slew of Bluetooth complaints after Yosemite was released, along with a bunch of supposed fixes. Some of which worked in a very short term. Most did nothing. I went through the laundry list: disabled handoff to iOS; disabled file vault; boot into safe mode and repair permissions; SMC reset; PRAM reset. None worked for more than 10 minutes. I tried a different thunderbolt to displayport cable thinking one might be faulty, no change. I got tired of using the wired USB mouse so I tried it in normal operation, without an external monitor because I saw someone mention a possible video memory leak that might be causing issues. The Magic Mouse did work, but my lack of screen real estate was a little hard to deal with. Then I stumbled upon this thread and this particular post, so I gave running the MBP open with an external monitor (not my ideal set up due to not much desk space) a shot. Lo and behold, the Magic Mouse works with no jitter. It's only in clamshell that it gets shaky. Your (and Apple's tech support's) theory of the radios causing interference with each other in clamshell mode makes the most sense. Wish Apple would get on a fix for this.

This cannot be the clamshell mode. I never use my MBP in clamshell mode.

I have an early 2013 15" MBP Retina. I use two Dell external screens with HDMI and Thunderbolt-HDMI cable. And the MBP screen is always open in the middle of the two.

I sometimes get my Magic Mouse jittery. Especially when the mouse is in the external screens, more so on the Thunderbolt-HDMI connected one.

This must be some memory leak from video...

I also agree it has something to do with memory leakage. I get the same jittery mouse whether my 13" late 2011 MBP is open or shut, I usually use it connected to the apple thunderbolt screen. It makes no difference if WI-FI is on or off, but it does make a difference if there's a lot going on on screen (I use ableton live in dual screen mode mostly)

I'm using a mid-2011 iMac and I've had a very annoying lag on my Magic Mouse for the last few weeks. It's been particularly noticeable when scrolling. I can't remember exactly when it started but I'm running Yosemite and in general I always apply new OS updates pretty quickly. After reading this thread I tried the solution from Forgewire to reset SMC and NVRAM and it worked! I recommend trying this solution if you're having lag problems with your Magic Mouse.

I reset SMC and NVRAM almost daily, this is beginning to feel like a Windows machine that you have to reboot everyday.

This still does not fix my issue, it starts off ok then it begins again usually at heavy load. Probably just going to use a USB mouse, it does not happen on that.

    10.10.3

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)

I am also using dual screen with second monitor on thunderbolt port.

I have already had my logic board and LCD replaced on this, wondering with the next thing I will have to pay to have fixed.

I am currently suffering this sluggish problem with all three of my Bluetooth devices; Apple Wireless keyboard, Magic Mouse and Trackpad which are all connected to my late 2013 iMac 21"

I have seen problems with my Magic Mouse in the past with Mavericks but it was just isolated to the Magic Mouse and not the keyboard.  For reasons I am unsure of, the problem of the slow, laggy, erratic cursor seemed to just disappear.  I don't recall doing anything.

I upgraded to Yosemite recently and the problem did not reoccur until last week when I took the 10.10.3 patch.  Since that point all my Bluetooth connected peripherals have gone haywire.  All three will randomly disconnect, the keyboard will disconnect, the cursor from the Trackpad is almost unusable most of the time and the mouse is just laggy.  It is very frustrating.

    So far I have tried everything I have read that has brought about fixes for various users and they are as follows;

    • Just plain old turning the Mac off and then on again. This has limited effect and gives me a small window of respite until I fire up Safari or Mail and then the problems return.
    • Turning Wi-Fi off. This has no effect.
    • Starting in Safe mode. This did nothing for me and the problems were exactly the same.
    • Deleting the keyboard, mouse and trackpad drivers.  I thought had cracked it with this because I had a problem free day but after a day, I was back to square one.
    • Resetting the SMC and NVRAM. This has a short term effect and then the problems return.
    • Shutting the Mac down, removing my one USB 3.0 device and then booting the Mac back up.  This did nothing either and the problem was still there.
    • Batteries are all at 100%.

I haven’t moved anything on the desk and I haven’t introduced any new hardware so I am thinking that the problem is with 10.10.3.

Here’s hoping that it is a known bug and that Apple are doing something about it.

I have also tried all suggested fixes. The only one that made any difference was the SMC NVRAM reset, which helped for aprox 1 day, now the problem is as bad as ever. Have reverted to a usb mouse as I couldn't handle it any longer. Makes a very slick machine feel like one of the most sluggish machines I've ever used !

    come on Apple

Just this morning i've been having 'sluggish' issues again, and this time i decided to move my mobile phone.

Initially, my laptop is on the left, mouse on the right, and phone in my pocket [kinda] between the two.

As soon as I moved my phone out from between the laptop and mouse, the sluggishness went away.

So it seems like at least 'one' cause of the problem is bluetooth interference caused when an iPhone is intercepting the transmission between mouse and computer.

    Hope this helps someone else.

Hmmm. I turned off bluetooth on my phone and the jitteryness and unresponsiveness went away on my magic mouse. So far anyway. Got my fingers and toes crossed.

I've had similar findings to dcbowe. I've got an early 2011 MBP on Yosemite 10.10.3 that I run in clamshell with a BenQ GL2460 monitor. The mouse lagginess is intermittent but annoyingly frequent. I've done the SMC and PRAM resets, been on the phone to Apple support only to be told to put fresh batteries in and reset the bluetooth pairing (spoiler: neither helped), but if I run the MBP slightly open, the mouse issue seems to be mostly resolved. Before I upgraded to 10.10.2, this was not an issue. Apple, PLEASE fix this.
