Q: iTunes 12 has no option to create AAC version

iTunes 12.0.1.26

iOS 8.0.2 (12A405) on associated iPhone 5S

Win7 Home Prem SP1

Core i7-4700MQ 4xcore CPU @ 2.4 GHz

129 GiB free on bootable C partition (SSD); 509 GiB free on data partition (conventional magnetic HDD)

I make original ringtones. I just created a new one, imported it to my iTunes library first as an mp3, then as a wav file. When I right-click the associated file in either its mp3 version or wav version, the "Create AAC Version" selection in the context menu no longer appears, not even as a greyed out item, even though "Create MP3 Version" does appear.

Are .m4r files still the native ringtone format for iOS 8? Has the procedure for creating ringtones changed?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.0.2, Win7 Home SP1

command-click (right click on windows) on the newly created m4a song in your iTunes library and choose "show in finder" or "show in windows explorer".

copy that file to let's say desktop.

change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r and drag and drop it to iTunes.

Mind that the ringtone shouldn't be longer than 40 seconds, otherwise it may not be transferred onto your phone. if you need to trim it and you don't know how, just get the file info of the original mp3 file and set start and stop times under Options tab. you may want to raise the volume of the song, as in most cases song-ringtones are pretty quiet. after the conversion to aac your file will be trimmed to the length you've set before.

btw in iTunes 12.4.1.6 (the last one as for today) the 'Create AAC version' is hidden under File->Convert (on Windows)

    good luck.

So quick question about all of this do you have to purchase the song in iTunes first before you can create an ACC because i keep getting a message saying cant created because protected files can not being able to be converted.

Protected files would be either old purchases from the iTunes Store, or else Apple Music tracks.  Protected files cannot be converted.

It seems like you're trying create a ringtone from a song from Apple Music. That is impossible, as those files can be played exclusively in iTunes / iOS / tvOS And can't be edited in any way.

My guide refers to .mp3 files. You can create a ringtone from a purchased song from the iTunes Store tho. Just skip the create AAC step as iTunes Store songs already are in AAC format. But I don't know how to trim them on Windows. On OS X I simply use garageband. Maybe Quicktime for Windows?

Anyways, if you purchase a song, simply copy and paste it into different locatio and change the extension from m4a to m4r and add that file to iTunes library. But I still believe it should not be longer than 40 secs. But you can try with a full song. Maybe it will work for you.

Yes in iTunes 12 its missing. You can do so by Clicking on the File Menu - Convert - Create AAC Version. Hope this helps.

    Hi All,

My 'Create AAC version' has completely disappeared from my iTunes 12.4.1.6, or I basically have no idea where it is.

Would really appreciate if anyone could guide me on finding it so that I can create my ringtones.

    Thank you!

You must change CD Import settings from MP3 to AAC in iTunes preferences. Then you will see the Create AAC  instead of Create MP3 in the very same menu that can be seen on your screenshot.

It's moved into new version itunes. Go to Preferences (CTRL + ,) in Windows and (command + ,) in Mac and In General tab click Import settings.

Selecty AAC Encoder from drop down and click ok.

Now select the song you want to create AAC version and go to

File -> Convert -> Create AAC Version.

    Hope it helps
