Beware - dodgy repairer on Koh Tao, Thailand

My partner and I were on vacation on the Island of Koh Tao in Thailand and her iPhone 5 went flat but then wouldn't charge or turn on. I tried doing the reset thing by holding down the button whilst turning it on, nothing worked. We spotted a phone repair shop when in the shopping area in Koh Tao and decided to take it there to see if they could reset it. The guy said come back in two hours. When we returned he said no it won't work, charged us nothing and gave back the phone. When we returned home to Australia a few weeks later we contacted Apple to have it repaired, the lady on the phone said it was probably still under warranty so we sent it to the Apple service place in Sydney. When the service centre received it they sent me an email saying the warranty was void because it had a non-genuine part fitted - MLB. whatever that is. News to me!! That repairer in Koh Tao must have swapped out something from my phone and put in the non-genuine part. Now Apple wont repair under warranty and want to charge me $690 to repair it because the non-genuine part voids warranty. Hello Apple! The phone failed first, thats why I took it to the repairer. So now I'm up for the cost of a new phone. That repairer must have pulled out a valuable part from my phone to use for other repairs and put in a dodgy one. What a scammer!!!. Nice of Apple to refuse to help me - just like rubbing salt into the wound.

Most expensive things I buy last more than 12 months Pete, and I no don't tamper with them. Do you work for Apple too? I bought a fridge earlier this year and it kept frosting up, contacted the company, they came out and repaired it in the house within a few days, no ifs, no buts, Thats customer service.

I tend to buy higher end appliances because I know they will be more likely to last the distance, just like Apple is supposed to. The main point is the phone failed before anyone tampered with it, so it was faulty.

Probably something he wanted and was just waiting for the first ....tourist.... to show up😁

Apple does not repair iPhones (except in some Countries where they replace the glass )

They swap out for a factory refurbished device identical to the donor unit

Read the warranty document

Yeah exactly, I got ripped off by that repairer because I was tourist and just wanted to get the phone working, which was bad enough, now I've just gone through over a month of having Apple support pretend they want to help me, but actually don't want to, they just want to defend their rigid policies - at any cost. Replacing a phone at $700 is a lot for me but not for Apple, theyd rather spend it on phone calls defending their position.

Apple doesn't provide service options if you've had unauthorized maintenance done on your iPhone (which you have). That's always been their policy, and was their policy when you purchased the iPhone. Your purchase of the iPhone is a tantamount agreement to their warranty policies. It's unfortunate that you chose expedience over proper procedures. So, yes, now you're 'on the hook' for a full cost replacement. And that's due to your actions, not Apple's.

The minute that guy opened up the device, even if he didn't swap out anything at all, you voided your warranty. No one forced you to do so.

Not you Peter, TJBUSMC1973 who staunchly defended Apple's "secret society" rules. We didn't know about Apple's strict rules, My girlfriend is Thai, she didn't know. I have an iPhone that is provided by my employer and if it ever had an issue I would just take it to our IT dept. (BTW I have had my iPhone 4 for nearly 4 years with not one issue which is what you expect from such an expensive item) so I've never read the warranty terms. I wonder how TJBUSMC1973 would like to do without a phone for three weeks because it failed in the first days of a vacation in a country with about one Apple store, then have to have no phone for three months while Apple mucks you around and won't give you a straight answer. I never gave permission to the guy to open the phone, I thought he was gonna try to reset it by plugging it into a PC thats all, and thats all I thought he did because he didn't charge us anything.
