Can't get rid of "Family" in calendar

I want to get rid of "Family" in my iCal. I'm willing to get rid of family sharing if that will do it. I looked of settings/icloud/family on my phone as shown on an Apple article, but that must be for an earlier version of IOS.

Actually, I'd like to keep family sharing, but that isn't important. I have an iTunes account, and my wife has an iCloud account which we share. My iTunes account doesn't do everything as Apple now requires it be an e-mail address for some features.

She gets confused when the Calendar shows both our "Brazee" calendar (with lots of events) and the new empty "Family" calendar, as well as our personal calendars.

The Family calendar is created automatically, if you set up Family sharing. You cannot delete it. You can only hide the family events by deselecting the checkmark to the left of the Family Calendar.

Stop Family Sharing, if you do not want this calendar to show.

If you joined Family Sharing, a shared calendar called “Family” automatically appears in the Calendar app. Everyone in your family can view and update the Family calendar, so it’s a good way to keep track of events such as family camping trips and violin recitals.

Show or hide family events: Select or deselect the family calendar by clicking to the left of Family in the sidebar.

Thanks to the post above, I was able to delete the 6 extra "Family" calendars that were a product of botched attempts to sign up (debit card didn't prove I was over the age of consent). Below are the steps I followed based on the software designs of today:

(1) sign into icloud

(2) click on calendar icon

(3) view list of calendars on left

(4) click "Edit" at the bottom-left

(5) delete undesired calendars

(6) click "Done"

Thank you for articulating this problem, I was just searching for a solution myself. Forcing people to clutter up their devices with unnecessary and un-asked for additions is, frankly, disgusting. I have just wasted over an hour trying to figure out how to first share this calendar, then delete it - only to find out that I was wasting my time and the only way to get rid of it is a workaround. Apple you should change this immediately so people can remove this trash from their devices, it clutters up organization and leads to wasted time and energy.

But that option is not in the "family" calendar.

Because it is an automatically created calendar, required by Family Sharing.

To turn off family sharing:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/8/#/iph4cd8953e2

Leave Family Sharing. Go to Settings > iCloud > Family, then tap Leave Family Sharing. If you are the organizer, go to Settings > iCloud > Family, tap your name, then tap Stop Family Sharing. For more information, see support.apple.com/kb/HT201081.

I had two people leave my family sharing and I think I remember just removing the individuals. A new Family calendar was set up, but the old one was still there and still sharing with the two persons who were no longer part of family sharing. *sigh* I couldn't delete the old one and finally figured out that I, as the sharer, needed to stop sharing. Problem solved: I stopped sharing and then was able to delete the offending calendar. I just had to invite my three family members again and we are all good to go now.

Also, since I use an iPad and an iPhone, I noticed that even after choosing a default calendar on one of the devices, the other was still placing appointments in the old Family calendar. I checked the other device and the default calendar was not updated on it. I changed the default calendar on icloud.com, expecting that both devices would now show the same calendar, but not so. I had to manually change it. I suspect that signing out on the second device and signing back in would have solved the issue. Either way, I now have my problem completely solved.

Caveat:

We don't really use this feature and so have no shared events of any importance, just stuff that got put on there without me realizing it, frequently giving rise to the question about why was I sharing that event, which had absolutely nothing to do with them. I have no clue how this affects shared calendars that really serve a purpose.

How many people have this problem? I do. Why the heck would Apple create a calendar for my family who was already sharing calendars on our Mac's before this came to pass? I've just been ignoring it because I thought my wife created a calendar and then never used it. Now, I'm trying to simplify my life & tech and find out there's an 8 month problem that hasn't been addressed by Mac despite repeated updates...Eerily reminiscent to my old Windows Vista. Whose ignorant idea was this to automatically give people something they can't opt out of? This "Family" calendar...Nike + iPod app...Newsstand...Game Center...Stocks...Health...iBooks...Compass...Apple Watch app...automatic time zone readjustments...what's next, Apple? Permanent David Guetta playlists? And if I don't want the calendar, I have to opt out of Family Sharing, a concept I love and that saves us money OR have my wife to transfer appointment by appointment every item on our shared calendar which includes a buttload of appointments (many recurring) which we were already sharing. Come on, son. This is some of the same piece of crap reasoning why I left Windows. Apple is stumbling into making themselves more like Microsoft which is a heartier, cheaper competitor. Stop it, Apple!!!

This is what apple have said to do but it hasn't changed a thing. The calendar on all our phones keep updating.

This "Family" calendar can be deleted through another app that uses CalDav. I opened 2Do (by Guided Ways) and deleted the list "Family," which that app created automatically to stay in sync with the rest of CalDav. When I opened iCal it was gone- poof!

I agree that this is another in a string of worrying series of stupid and unnecessary impositions on Apple's part, but I found a very easy way around this one... if you have the right set-up. I haven't tested this method with another app, but I hope others can use it with other apps and services that such as Google Calendar or Remember the Milk.

I am the owner of our Family account and my wife was using another email address when the account was created. We have changed all her Apple credentials to her new email address, but the old address still appears in several places and cannot be edited or removed. The Family calendar is one and the most onerous to deal with. We created a new shared calendar, but when I create an event on my device it automatically goes to the old Family Calendar that she never sees because the email address it is tied to is obsolete and no longer available. When she creates an event it goes to the new shared calendar, likely because she uses her revised Apple credentials. This is a real nuisance and the complaints here are getting quite old. I've often said no one supervises the Apple back-office support staff and this is a good example proving the point. Does anyone know how to remove an obsolete Family calendar tied to an email address no longer available?

I have this problem too!

My wife's email address on the Family Share Calendar is no longer valid. We changed her iTunes account information. The Family Share Calendar still has her invalid email address. It cannot be deleted or changed.

I've tried stopping iCloud sharing on all devices, removing her from the Family Share, and then restarting iCloud. No change.

What a pain!

I solved the problem by removing my wife from family share in all devices (again) and the App Store then deleting all the calendars in our respective iCloud accounts, except the private calendar that cannot be deleted. Deleting the share in the App Store was the key. I then started over and linked my master Apple account to hers then re-sharing on all the devices. There is a new Family calendar that is truly shared two ways. We renamed it on all devices so we know we are using the shared calendar and not the private calendars. We use the Windows Outlook client for email and the new version has an iCloud add-in that allows us to enter items on the shared calendar of any device that almost instantly appears on the other five devices without iTunes: his/hers iPhone, iPad and Windows laptops. This is a major improvement since we could never keep our calendars in-sync with iTunes or the old one-way shared iCloud calendar. Hope this works for you Good Luck.

This is really an egregious error.

I already had a calendar called 'Family' before turning on family sharing. iCloud decided to duplicate every single event from the existing Family calendar into the new shared one, including birthdays, events, etc. from my personal contacts list.

So now, anyone we have on our family sharing gets notifications for events they shouldn't, and I receive multiple alarms for events. If they want to use the calendar, they have to turn off all notifications - which kind of defeats the purpose of some shared calendar events they SHOULD get.

I can't delete the new 'Family' shared calendar and I can't delete a single event in the calendar either. Birthdays; anniversaries; etc. from contacts can't be removed unless I delete it from the contact.

Pretty moronic implementation. Anyone have suggestions?
