Q: Is it possible to upgrade FCE 4 to 4.0.1 in Yosemite?

I've recently begun migrating to a new MacBook Pro running Yosemite. I have installed FCE 4. However, when I try to open one of my project files, the application barked at me that the file format was too recent. I slapped my head, and thought, "Of course, I need to update to 4.0.1." However, when I fire up System Preferences, and look at the App Store for software updates, nothing seems available for FCE.

This begs three questions:

1) Can the 4.0.1. update still be downloaded from somewhere?

2) Will it run under Yosemite?

3) If not, is there a utility for translating a FCE 4.0.1. format .fcp file into something that the latest version of Pro will read? I know a little about 7toX, but will that work for a FinalCut Express file?

Thanks for any insights you can give me.

I believe there was some discussion in this forum a while ago that the 4.01 update has disappeared from the Apple site.

Not 100% sure about that. One thing though, in order for Software Update to work, FCE needs to be installed in the directory the installer wants to put it in and you cannot change the name, etc.

    Do you FCP-X installed?

Instead of doing the install from disk, did you try migrating FCE from your previous computer?

To get an FCE file to FCP-X you would need to open it in FCP-6 or FCP-7, then export an XML of the project, take that XML in 7toX and covert it and then open that converted file in FCP-X and reconnect the media. Not all the nuances of the project will make it through all those conversions.

    Oh, interesting.

No, I haven't made the move to FCP-X yet, and am currently trying to figure out how I want to go. I don't even have an old copy of FCP-7, and it looks as if picking one up on E-Bay is gonna be pricey. Having looked through the 7toX documentation, I'm lamenting the fact that it doesn't take across either freeze frames or .IPR files, because that means that no matter what I do, a substantial number of our videos are going to be borked. I have to say that the whole notion of completely destroying backwards compatibility with the introduction of FCP-X just still chaps my ***. Frankly, if they've cooked my entire back-library of material, there's a spiteful part of me that's like, "Well, fine, I'll just go to Adobe Premier, because we use Creative Suite for all the rest of our design work anyway. Eff-Yoo, Apple..."   Thus, all options are on the table at this point, because even with 7toX, it appears that there's not really a clean migration strategy.

    Thanks for your input!

I switched from FCP-7 to Premiere Pro and am happy I did.
