I read the tip that says to let message recipients know where I am I tap details and then share my location. Where is the details button? I couldn't find it in a message field or in settings.

Within the message thread, tap Details (upper right), then Send my Location or Share my Current Location.

Thanks James. So I have to have sent at least one message before I can tell it to send my location because there's no thread until there's a message. I sent this to my daughter and she got the text box but no map. Using android. Does it only work with iPhone?

No, there is an alternate settings (which I have not used): Settings app > Privacy > Locations Services [make sure this is ON] > Share My Location.
I do not think it works with Android. However, I am not sure about that. The instructions in the interface aren't clear about that, nor is the user guide.
It did work with Android, but not smoothly. My daughter went through several steps to find my location. Her response... "Wouldn't it be easier to just call you and ask?" Oh well. A nice try.
