Q: Guide: How to solve Yosemite memory leaks and CPU usage

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.

I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.

First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.

Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.

Guide of how to access Safe Mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.

To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again. You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.

More info about PRAM: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM

Voila, reconnect your external displays and enjoy your system.

    Hi,

thanks for your detailed information. Helps a lot in understanding!

I think, I did mix drivers and Agents/Daemons. Apple-Support was looking for Agents and Daemons and did not find any responsible ones.

What the senior support found out: There must be something wrong in upgrading to Yosemite because of these known propblems with mail and windowserver and the crashing while hibernating.

The guy told me that two things were strange:

    1. In recovery mode I can only reinstall Mavericks instead of Yosemite (no other choice) and the online-recovery also does not offer Yosemite.

(Actually it is supposed to be correct this way according to Apples online-information being posted in this forum)

    2. The 'Fix-permissions' in recovery-mode is greyed

They called back twice and wanted to call back another time, but no call at fixed time.

Does not look too bad, doesn't it?

I have no idea of what doing next.

BTW: I followed the instructions of Luis M. first of all and it was a little bit better but problems are returning.

    Regards

    2. The 'Fix-permissions' in recovery-mode is greyed

The two "strange" things point to a bad install problem, as well. A complete Yosemite install should have given you a new Recover HD allowing you to install Yosemite. Since it's telling you it can only install Mavericks it must be left over from your original Mavericks install. There is a hack utility that allows you to replace the Recovery HD, but it requires you to have a Yosemite installer so you you might just as well use it to do a re-install. And yes, Internet Recovery will only install the version of OS X that originally shipped with that model Mac. I'd have to guess that Fix Permissions is grayed because it's the wrong version of Disk Utility and can't be used to fix Yosemite permissions.

So you should be able to go to OS X Yosemite and download the 10.10.1 installer.  When it launches it will tell you that you already have it installed. Just chose to install it anyway. Before doing that it would be a good idea to copy or move the installer from /Applications/ to someplace safe as it will be deleted from there when the installation completes. That way you won't have to download it if needed again.

I assume that Parallels 9 is responsible for most of the Extensions I don't recognize as well as NTFS and FUSE software. I know those last two can cause issues, but suspect they are essential to access Windows volumes.

I wasn't familiar with DesignScience.DSMTTool so had to look it up.  Apparently associated with MathType for use in Word Documents. Don't see that as a problem, except that it didn't load for whatever reason. Possible it only loads when needed.

[ungültig?]    com.epson.esua.launcher.plist might be something left over from Epson Printer Software that's no longer needed/installed where it should be.

DirectorShockwave: Version: 12.0.5r146 - SDK 10.6 is out of date (current is Version 12.1.4.154) but unless you really need it for something, best to trash it. See Why You Should Ditch Adobe Shockwave.

Thank you for the information. Shockwave uninstalled.

The re-install of Yosemite I'll take care of these days and shall report on success.

Just in case somebody knows: Will there be a complete loss of data with re-installation or will mails and accounts (mail and iTunes/iTunesmatch) travel to the new system? (timemachine backup exists double)

As long as you don't erase the hard drive first (clean install) only the System will be replaced. It won't bother User folders or third party apps.

    Hi and thanks!!!

Yosemite (only found 10.10.-installer) installed and update (10.10.1) installed afterwards.

    Recovery-boot:

    1. Yosemite now is the recovery-install-version

    2. 'Fix-permissions' now active!

HD could be checked and repaired: bad blocks

    Permissions could be fixed.

Let's see whether so problems have gone!

    Thanks again!

That isn't good. Modern drives are normally self-repairing with regard to bad blocks. Usually the only time you see that kind of error is when the drive is out of spares that can be re-allocated. The drive may be failing and when it does it will almost certainly go very quickly.  Check it with SMART Utility or DriveDX for best diagnostics.

What people will do to install this junk. I've gone back to 10.8.5 and no one should have to go thru all this to install a OS,

    Hi Luis,

Thank you for posting this information.  Since I use my laptop for work almost everyday I am kinda going nuts.

Unfortunately, after doing all the steps you listed, my Early 2011 MacBook Pro is still so sluggish with Yosemite it makes work almost impossible.

I have checked other discussions for other tips such as turning off file vault which I have also done.

Note:  I have just backed up everything which I manually do regularly.

Below is the latest etrecheck:    I have no idea what it means.

Maybe you or someone can help me.    Thanks.

    Original OP here.

After more researching I've found ANOTHER cause for this problem: Those who have dark mode activate it, turn it off.

    I'm serious.

I'm looking into why dark mode is causing this problem, but the effects of turning it off are dramatic, now Yosemite runs better than Mavericks for me.

    Hi Luis,

Thanks for replying so quickly.    I do not have dark mode activated.  (In other words, in the General tab of System Preferences, I do not have the "use dark Menu bar and Dock" box checked.

If there is another box I need to change, pls. let me know.

    Many thanks.

I've been trying to fix this issue ever since Yosemite came out. I had already tried the PRAM and SMC resets and permission fixes but they didn't do anything. I figured maybe doing things in this exact order might help but after following the instructions a few days ago I am once again experiencing system slowdown after a couple days uptime. Arghhhh

You are not going to fix it. Sad but true. If it was as easy as un clicking a few boxes, don't you think Apple would have said such ? I'm on my 2013 MacPro with 16gb and it idles at 5297 MB Used with nothing. Open a web session and it's 7-8gb Enough, going back to ML...

That's exactly the way it's supposed to work. Memory management strives to keep RAM as full as possible to maximize efficiency and energy use. Much faster to use what's already in RAM when needed instead of going to the hard drive to retrieve it. Is RAM use your only complaint here?
