Q: Why are there 5 duplicate "iMac" Shared/Devices in Finder?

I had noticed a couple duplicates before (even with Mavericks) but now there are suddenly 5 "iMac"'s showing under Shared & Devices in Finder. What's going on? There's only one iMac and two WIN PC's on network. Been this way for years.

I just tried these steps, and they worked for me.  I'll report back if the problem returns.

Yes, this seems to have resolved the issue, I will report back if the issue returns...

However I was hoping it would also resolve my "wake for access" issue but it didn't, my ATV 's 2 & 3 won't wake my iMac (27" late 2009) after the Yosemite install.

(sorry not sure how to include your quote in the response but I "liked" your answer)

Well it appears I resolved my "wake for access" issue also, I guess in the wake of the update and the 5 steps all i did was turn off home sharing on my iMac and and turn back on again.

I suppose i should have tried this before spouting off again....

once again if the issue returns i will report back.

In my case, Back to My Mac was never selected. I also did not restart DSL router/modem. Issue still hasn't returned (even pre OS X 10.10.1).

10.10.1 did indeed fix this for my 3 macs so before passing judgement try this.

    1) rename your mac to something unique you haven't used before (under sharing)

    2) turn off back to my mac, wake for network access in system preferences (under iCloud and power respectively)

    3) restart your router

    4) change your name back to your preferred name

    5) turn back on back to my mac, wake for network access, etc.

I guess I spoke too soon on the "wake for access" issue, it still isn't working, it seemed to be working by just signing in/out of home sharing but a few hours later  -no go- I tried a factory reset on the ATV but that didn't work either.

I am happy to report though that after approx 24 hours the multiple mac issue appears to be resolved, it has not returned.

I'll keep digging for fix on the wake for access issue.....

Did a PRAM reset which appears to have resolved the Wake For Access issue, The ATV response is finicky and sometime takes a couple of tries but eventually it loads the library

    Hi Sapote,

While you wait for Apple to fix this, you can fix it by simply restarting your AirPort Time Capsule / Extreme / Express, then restart all of your Macs.

    This worked for me.

    HTH,

    Karl

Read the thread/posts. I resolved it early on myself but haven't chosen "This solved my question" for now just in case.

Fair enough, I saw that it wasn't solved so thought I'd help out as I had the same issue.

This worked for me.  I had 29 copies of my shared iMac!  Now I have only one.  Thanks!

I did what you suggested.  I changed the computer name to iMac from iMac (2) in Preferences/Sharing, then turned off the wifi and turned it back on.  Now the name stays at iMac and hasn't reverted to a duplicate name since.

What worked for you exactly? If it was what I did/said please accordingly.
