OS X 10.10.0 black dot on sent folder in mail

I have a black dot on the sent folder and losing sent folder messages.

They seem to be sending OK, just not available in the sent folder afterward.

How can I fix this?

I had the same problem but after doing some investigation this is what I believe happened:

Looks like for some reason the black dot is because you don't have a "SENT" folder define. This is what I did to fix it.

I found a "SENT" folder under my INBOX for the same account. This SENT folder is the same that I have in my mail server, when I was sending mails from my mail server the mails showed up on this SENT folder. When I was sending mails from my mac mail I was loosing them (same as happened to you).

So I choose (highlight) this folder, then I went to menu bar-> mail folder -> use this mail folder as -> Sent Folder. (the name might be a little different since I don't have an english version of the mail).

After choosing this option the black dot disappear and the sent mails start showing up again.

Hope this helps.

Mail 8.0, in my US English version, with the black dot Sent folder hightlighted, going to Mailbox in the Menu Bar > Use This Mailbox As would not let me select the greyed out Sent Mailbox.

Using your advice as a guide -

I tried selecting the Sent Message folder inside the duplicate mail address name folder, below the Inbox, Flagged, Sent, Junk and Trash folders.

With this Sent Message folder still selected I went to Mailbox in the Menu Bar > Use This Mailbox As and selected Sent Mailbox.

Black Dot went away onmail address name folder in Sent below Inbox and Flagged.

The Sent Message folder inside the duplicate mail address name folder, below the Inbox, Flagged, Sent, Junk and Trash folders, was gone.

I went to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and selected the mail address namethen Mail Box Behaviors tab and found the Sent check box for Store sent messages on server had been automatically selected.

Sent messages are now going to my IMAP hosting provider. Thanks for the nudge in the right direction.

Hi Axlemax,

yup, I'm sure the emails were getting to their recipients. I sent quite a few panicky duplicates to a client one night thinking they were getting lost, but it turned out she received them all.

Removing the "Black Spot" was the key. i.e. selecting a sent folder (not the one with the Black Spot) where you would like the sent messages to go, highlighting it, going to Mailbox (in the Menu bar) dropdown, "Use This Mailbox As", Sent.

Couldn't be easier. Other than the fact it took 4hrs for me to find this solution on the boards!

Hey-Ho.

This helped me. A new sent folder was located under the Inbox account, but I had an older sent folder below under Sent mail. I selected the new sent folder and chose Mailbox>Use this mailbox as>Sent mailbox but it was grey. Then I selected the old sent folder below and chose Mailbox>Use this mailbox as>Sent mailbox and it worked! The sent folder above disappeared and the black dot on the older sent folder now had the airplane icon. It did not retrieve prior messages sent, but everything new being sent now appears.

This response is the one that solved my problem. When I selected the entry that I believe George was referring to – the one with the black dot next to it – the "Use this mail folder as" options were greyed out. But when I found the folder in my Inbox containing the "Sent" folder, as Coctavio_sanabria suggested, I followed the same instructions that both responders were basically saying and this did work. The only confusion I had was where that folder was located. Thanks to both of you.
