tried to update my 5th gen ipod touch, lost internet access and ipod went to resotre mode. I can't remember my apple id or password I used

I tried to update my 5th gen ipod touch to the new operating system. during the download the internet connection was lost and I got a message that I needed to restore the ipod and I chose to do that however, I can't remember the Apple ID I used to set up the touch and now I can't get into it. the Activation help is not very helpful. I do have an icloud account but I can't remember that either. it's late and I need to fix this.
