Yosemite [erroneously] displays multiple Shared Instances under Finder

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have noticed that my iMac appears several times in the Shared area of Finder

e.g

Devices

iMac (13)

Shared

iMac

iMac (2)

iMac (4)

iMac (5)

iMac (6)

iMac (7)

iMac (8)

etc..

I had noticed something similar under Mavericks; the System Log suggested that there was another system [duplicate] on the network using the same Name/IP Address. In that case the Device Name was changed to iMac (2).

I have tried to edit the Device Name under Sharing in System Preferences - but the system changes it back to some other "random" number

Interestingly it says:

Computer Name: iMac (13)

Computers on your local network can access your computer at: iMac-12.local

Any ideas what is happening ? [I have noticed a few other folks (on other forums have encountered the same problem - although no solution as yet!]

Many Thanks

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Try one of these:

1) Finder method:

Finder...Go...Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences/

Scroll through the list (sort it by name) until you get to com.apple.finder.plist

(It really should be there - its autocreated everytime Finder launches...)

2. Terminal method:

Open Terminal.app and at the shell type to open that hidden folder:

open ~/Library/Preferences/

or

open /User/[your name here]/Library/Preferences/

I have been troubleshooting this issue with my two computers (iMac OS X 10.10, Mac mini OS X 10.10) by following the instructions given here for about 3 weeks. (1. Reboot/Reset Airport Basestation. 2. Delete com.apple.finder.plist.) Issue was resolved in first place but did reoccur pretty soon after again and again. Today I notice that this issue has become persistent. TB steps won't help anymore.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a Yosemite bug that has no permanent solution at the moment.

I personally know of several bug reports filed with Apple both from beta testers and after the full public release. Reinstalling Yosemite will accomplish nothing and most of the tweaks that seem to make the problem go away will only provide relief for a few days, with the problem recurring within a week.

The bottom line is, we will have to wait until Apple actually fixes this one in Yosemite.

This is happening to my mother's computer too. First Yosemite install hosed her computer. I had to erase her hard drive and re-install Yosemite fresh, and her computer works okay now. But her computer name keeps duplicating under the "Shared" section on the side bar of the Finder window.

Apple, please fix. And please have one of your staff at least acknowledge some of these problems Yosemite is having... dropped WiFi, Duplicate computer names, slow startup, etc. Are you guys fixing these problems??

try this

i had a network issue and your issue and your issue disappeared after doing the below so i don't know if it will work or not but it won't harm to try as they all get rebuilt on reboot

you will need to enter your network prefs again if it's not DHCP

hold shift cmd G and paste this

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

then Go

then delete or move

com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

com.apple.network.identification.plist ( i didn't have this file but it was in the network fix so i included it anyway)

com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist

NetworkInterfaces.plist

preferences.plist

i deleted these as well

com.apple.smb.server.plist

com.apple.smb.server.plist.lockfile

reboot

i can't test it because i don't have the problem anymore

hope it helps
