No hard drive space with almost no files?

Okay, I have a 120 gb SSD with OSX Mavericks on it, it used to have snow leopard. I have around 40 gb of files, but I have NO SPACE!!! I've deleted soo much stuff, and my computer has been to the apple store once to delete heaps of stuff because my computer didn't start up, ever (about a year ago). is there some kind of issue with my SSD? I have almost all of my files (except ones I could live without, or come with osx snow leopard or mavericks anyway) so I would be fine with completely deleting everything and starting with a new computer, except for files like Microsoft Word etc. because I'm not sure where the serial number for it is, I have copied the entire word files onto my usb but I'm not sure if that would work. Should I take it to the apple store and get them to sort it out or is there a fix or do I just have to cope with there only being 10gb of space?

PS I have no idea what category to put this in.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), heeelllllppppppp

Matt didn't recommend OmniDiskSweeper so it would delete files for you, he recommended it so you could determine what is on your computer. A full Mavericks installation takes up less than 20GB of space and you say you have about 10GB of free space - that means you have about 90GB of stuff on the computer.

I can recommend three quick steps that often free up lots of space for users. 1) restart in Safe Mode (restart and hold the shift key until the Apple menu appears). This will perform a disk repair and delete unnecessarily cache files. This can free up significant space for some people though others will see very little. At the very least your computer has gotten a disk check. 2) open iPhoto, look in the left window pane for Trash, right click it and select Empty trash. The iPhoto trash can doesn't automatically delete photos, like the Finder's trash you have to manually empty it. If you use iPhoto and have never emptied your trash this might restore a large amount of space. 3) Speaking of the Finder's trash, have you emptied that recently?

Finally, moving Word files won't free up much space. I'm an instructor and have all my notes, lectures, handouts and presentations on my computer. That all takes up less than 1 GB of drive space. What takes up the biggest chunk of my drive are music, video, and photos. That's where you need to look for big savings after performing the 3 steps above.

I Think you've misunderstood what the program does. It doesn't delete anything. It scans your drive and presents all the folders to you in size order. You'll probably find that Users is the largest folder (possibly not, but usually). Navigate into the largest folder, look at the subfolders, and keep browsing around until you find the large files that are filling up your system. Then make a judgment whether or not to delete them.
