I've doubled my RAM but still can't save big files in photoshop...

I have just upgraded my Ram from the shipped 4GB to 8GB but I still can't save big images in photoshop. It seems to have made no difference to the speed of general tasks and saving and I can't save big files in photoshop at all. I already moved massive amounts of files off my computer and onto my external hard drive, so there is much less in my computer now, and twice the RAM but it is making no noticeable difference. When I click memory, under 'about my mac' it shows that the RAM is installed and now has twice the memory. Could this be something to do with photoshop? I'm running CS6.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Thanks for answering me. I have deleted the files from the trash so that's not the issue. The error message I get when I try to save files is:

Could not save 'my file' because there is not enough memory (RAM). Try saving without optimisation or as a baseline jpeg.

So it's not me assuming it's a RAM thing, it's my computer telling me. I know nothing about this sort of thing myself. what else can it be?

Okay,

Thank you for the info.

I am not sure why you are getting messages about not enough RAM.

I work with image files this big and up to 1-1.5 GBs size and never had this issue.

I use Adobe CS3 and used to use this on an older Mac with only 2 GBs of RAM.

WIth lower RAM specs, it just, usually, takes longer for PS to perform certain tasks, as well as, it takes longer to save files, but I have never has PS throw up an insufficient RAM warning.

Before you tried saving the image as a TIFF file did you remember to Flatten the image first?

You need to flatten the image first before saving or exporting to any other type of image or graphics format.

Also, I just calculated 220 cm into inches and this is roughly 86.5 inches. Over 7 feet in length.

WIth an image that large, you may want to consider down sampling to a lower DPI to help with being able to work on and process images of this size much easier and it will be easier for your Print house to process, as well.

You might want to consider working with these rather large images at 225 DPI instead of 300 if resolution at close distances is still a concern.

Or what you good try is working with the images at 300 DPI, but then save them/export them as a Jpeg image at the highest image quality setting.

I do a lot of project where I use a high resolution jpeg image to save on image proceesing overhead.

The final printed images still come out pretty clear, clean and crisp without having to process those large files at a print house or having to deal with using that full resolution image in a page layout or illustration program.

Could be a Photoshop issues with the version you are running.

Do you have any external drives and use these as Photoshop scratch disc areas?

I am an long time Photoshop user and expert (almost 20 years) and I can't explain the issues you are having, either.

Maybe you should contact Adobe support forums or a Adobe support expert or even search for a Photoshop website/forum (there are a few independent Photoshop websites) and post your issues, there.

I am no longer a full time professional and I am only have CS3 and CS4 on my Mac and I refuse to use Adobe's subscription/rent an app for life system for their wares, so I won't be updating my Adobe software any longer.

I am perfectly content on using CS3 and CS4 as my graphic work tools.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.

Good Luck to you.
