Messages window jumping all over the place in Yosemite?

Since upgrading to Yosemite, my Messages window (specifically, the window with the message threads in them, Cmd-0) is jumping all over my screen when clicking on the window to bring it forward or clicking off the messages window into another window or to the finder. It's not 100% reproducible, but happens maybe 25-50% of the time.

I'll be working in Safari, click on the messages window to view a chat, then click in the box to type a response and the window moves to the location of the mouse, as if I had dragged it there. Or I'll type a reply to a message, and then click onto Mail or Safari, and the window magically jumps to where I clicked, again as if I had dragged the window.

I have not experienced this behavior with any other apps or windows. Only the Messages window in the Messages app, and only since upgrading to Yosemite.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

One think I can reproduce reliably:

1. Switch to another application leaving the Messages window title bar (top bar with close/minimize/maximize buttons) visible.

2. Click to the Messages title bar (to bring Messages to the top)

3. Click anywhere on the screen.

You would expect the object clicked in step 3 to react, but instead the Messages window moves on the screen to the point where you clicked, so that the exactly by the point clicked in step 2.

Hi,

I have seen other Threads like this in the Yosemite > Messages sub section but I cannot reproduce it myself - even with your clear "instructions".

A rough straw poll of the different computers it has been reported suggests it is Laptops and Desktops that are effected and it does not seem to matter if a Retina Screen is present or not.

Do any other apps have this issue ?

What about FaceTime or the Game Center ?

Ralph, thanks for the straw poll and questions. Just to followup, I have not experienced this behavior with any other applications or any other windows. And even within Messages, it only appears to be a problem with the main Messages window (CMD-0) and not the Buddy List window.

The problem began when I upgraded to Yosemite on my older iMac but I have since received a new iMac with Retina and the problem is also present with this new machine.

I can sometimes get into a rhythm of reproducibility where I am in Messages and I click on Mail window, then Safari window, then back to Messages... and all is well at this point... however, the next click makes the window jump to the location of the click... across multiple monitors, regardless of what window / application was clicked on. I can then resume the Mail >> Safari >> Messages >> CLICK, and again the window "jumps" to the mouse. I have been able to get about 5 in a row before the final click acts as you would normally expect it to.

I would label this as an annoyance, but it is certainly one of the more irritating annoyances I've ever encountered.

Humm,

It seems strange it only effects one app.

However I am not surprised it does not effect browsers due to their ability to use tabs.

It is also odd that those that have the issue cannot resolve it by moving the .plist for Messages that holds the window info (com.apple.ichat.plist).

Window focus is normally handled by Quicktime and Quartz.

A review of these Search items may help.

Hi,

Apple don't formally read these discussions

You need to give feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Apple provides the "space" for the Communities.

It does employ a limited number of Hosts (Moderators)

More recently they have added "Community Specialists" who pick up on posts over 24 hours old (in theory) and post links to Apple Technical Knowledge Doc and help articles.

Level 6 Posters (and above) can post to a area in the Lounge called New Technical Issues.

Added to the Lounge area with a link to this Thread.

It seems that many are reporting that if the Main (chat and Interface) window is partially behind another app then clicking on it does bring it to the "front" but the next click to do anything moves the window to that spot on the Screen.

This seems to be something to do with the focus of the window.

The people I have asked and responded have said it effects new and older machine alike, including with and without Retina Displays.

Also Laptops and Desktop seem to be equally affected.

They also report that they have not found other apps that it happens to.

Asking people to delete com.apple.ichat.plist achieves nothing even though this .plist holds the windowing info.

At this point I am at a lost as to what to suggest and feel it might be beyond the scope of User to User Suggestions.

At the same time I also think the numbers are low.

Hi,

I had it happen today trying to move a Terminal Window.

I seem to have the impression I was still dragging the mouse whilst trying to click and when I had picked up the window it followed the movement about.

However when I try to do it carefully to repeat it I can't replicate it.
