Messages window jumping all over the place in Yosemite?

Since upgrading to Yosemite, my Messages window (specifically, the window with the message threads in them, Cmd-0) is jumping all over my screen when clicking on the window to bring it forward or clicking off the messages window into another window or to the finder. It's not 100% reproducible, but happens maybe 25-50% of the time.

I'll be working in Safari, click on the messages window to view a chat, then click in the box to type a response and the window moves to the location of the mouse, as if I had dragged it there. Or I'll type a reply to a message, and then click onto Mail or Safari, and the window magically jumps to where I clicked, again as if I had dragged the window.

I have not experienced this behavior with any other apps or windows. Only the Messages window in the Messages app, and only since upgrading to Yosemite.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

This has also happened a few times with a finder window, but I have not been able to pinpoint what causes. Unlike with Messages it is not caused by focusing the window with clicking on the very top of it. I remember it happening after I opened a PowerPoint, but I don't know if that had anything to do with it and I'm not able to replicate it.

Hi,

I once did it in a Terminal window.

I could not replicate it so I presumed it was a fluke of movement and fingers on my Magic Mouse.

I sometimes find my mouse seems to be more sensitive than I think, but having a 2006 MacBook Pro where I found I was dragging my little finger across the trackpad I times I know my fingers are not as sensitive as the mouse is.

I'm joining the club, it seems. I've had all kinds of weird issues with Yosemite. Quality control is in the toilet these days.

Another cursor-related issue I've noticed is that when clicking a link in Safari the mouse cursor will jump to a position above the link I've clicked; a distance about the same as the height of the whole cursor.

These issues with windows that move, cursors that jump, machine names that change on their own, hard lock-ups, stutters, slow Time Machine backups, time machine identity change false alarms, and the frustrating AirPort Utility that drops connections to the AirPort / Time Capsule are really making this feel like a Microsoft job. Ugh. Don't even get my started on the latest versions of iOS. So over this on one brand new device and one freshly installed device. Done.

To the "Me To's" of the 18 December 2014.

It will still be worth using the Feedback page

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html (The Main feedback page ends up here when you click on Messages)

This page is not that well updated (It still lists iChat and in the later drop downs in does not even list Messages.)

Put everything about your versions of the OS and Messages in the Free text area.

Also include a Link to this Thread to show it is still growing.

Just wanted to chime in that I'm having the same problem, have been for months but only just found this thread.

It actually seems to be getting worse.

I'm using a mid-2010 MBP, this happens with the trackpad and my razer taipan mouse.

Here's to hoping apple gets ahold of this. I already submitted a report per Ralph's suggestion. I'll include the link here for anyone that sees my reply as the most recent. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html

This is also driving me nuts. I submitted this to apple.com/feedback. I'm not optimistic.

The messages app is placed in the top right of my desktop. If you follow the steps below on macbook air trackpad, the Messages Window will jump on its own such that the top area of the Messages window justifies with where every you have tapped. Only happens with messages app.

1. Activate any other window/app so that Messages is in the background showing as inactive. 2. activate the Messages window by taping (and releasing your finger from the trackpad) just at the upper part of the window (title bar). 3. move your cursor to anywhere on the screen (even outside the messages window...while the Messages window is still active but you have not tapped or scrolled or anything else).

This method will reproduce the bug 100% of the time.

I'm also experiencing this issue. I can reproduce it by clicking on the Messages app title bar and then clicking elsewhere on the desktop.

Here's a gif of the bug in progress:

It doesn't happen 100% of the time (it seems that sometimes clicking too close to the Messages window won't cause the behavior), but I can get it to happen pretty frequently. Very frustrating bug that seems to only happen with Messages.

I submitted a bug report here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
