Aperture 3.6 and iPhoto 9.6 in Yosemite opens to a blank workspace

After upgrading to Yosemite 10.10 and Aperture 3.6 I was initially able to open my photos library (led on an external thunderbolt drive, over 63000 images, and over 350 Gb). Then yesterday, upon opening Aperture I get a message that the file needs to repair permissions in iPhoto in order to open. I don't use iPhoto, but knowing there is a unified file structure, I downloaded iPhoto and repaired the file permissions. Upon completion, iPhoto and Aperture open to the default external photos file but a blank screen comes up in Aperture, and a introductory screen comes up in iPhoto. I have gone thru the process of:

1) opening both apps with "command" "option" and progressing down the repair/rebuild options with the same end result.

2) initiated a time machine restore. A message box comes up asking me if I want to keep the original photo files, make duplicates, or replace the existing files. I chose to keep the originals.

After the backup the same result occur as before. What should I try next?

Had the same problem. When opening iPhoto it creates a file to communicate with Aperture and there is apparently a bug. On advice from Apple I deleted all files in Library/Application Support associated with iPhoto and now Aperture pops up immediately. Advice from Apple: Don't open iPhoto till there is an update for this bug.

Norbert, I cannot find the post you are referring to.

Have you had the problem with Aperture 3.6? This is surprising, since the Aperture 3.6 released is supposed to fix this bug, see the release Notes: Aperture 3.6 Release notes

Do you remember, which of the presets in Library/Application Support actually is causing the problem, since deleting all of them is causing a lot of work to restore the custom settings? It would be great to know the specific file.

I tried this, and even went as far as to delete iPhoto altogether. Still have the same blank workspace

I also rebooted the computer without effect.

I also tried opening the photo library by going to "switch to library", and by clicking on the photo file directly in Finder also to no effect.

While looking at my blank Aperture screen I decided to click though the various Libraries in the L bar; Projects, Photos, Faces, etc. When I got to iCloud the introductory banner shows up indicating that I am signed in under my existing account:

When I click on Use iCloud I get this message:

Which suggests that even though I am designating the Photos library to be opened, aperture opens without recognising this library

Can Aperture open a new, empty library on your internal drive? And can you add image files to the Library?

Then check, if Aperture can work with a new, empty library on your external drive. This will tell us, if the drive is the problem or your main aperture library.

7 post below I said the same thing (Aperture and iPhoto starting slow).

I had a 2 hours session with Apple to finally get A3 starting immidiately, and they said to not open iPhoto.

The first time after deleting the filea A3 opened immediately, the iPhoto opened immediately. When restarting A3 took 3 minutes again, apparently because of what iPhoto did upon opening. We did the whole deleting routine again - A3 opens fine but I didn'touch iPhoto again.

BTW When I had those issues, in the Aktivitätsanzeige there was a process "Digitale Bilder Erweiterung" that was taken up 500 MB of RAM. and com.apple. geod was not responding (red). now all these processes are gone.

I had no trouble with a new account and a new library. But going back to the real thing, same problem.

I think the trouble is in the iLifeAssetManagement folder, which is in Application support in the system library.

Yes, the iLifeAssetManagement folder in applications support has been known to cause problems, i.e. when the photo stream is used.

BTW When I had those issues, in the Aktivitätsanzeige there was a process "Digitale Bilder Erweiterung" that was taken up 500 MB of RAM. and com.apple. geod was not responding (red). now all these processes are gone.

I am still being these processes. "geod was not responding (red)" in red, and "Digitale Bilder Erweiterung" - that is probably what I am seeing as "Image Capture Extension" with a noticeable CPU time. But Aperture and iPhoto are both very responsive by now, and I can open the same library alternately in both.

So a new library is working well on your external drive. Now we know, that neither Aperture nor the drive are causing this.

You said, that you tried all repair /rebuild options. Is the last thing you tried, to repair the library in Aperture? This will usually set the version number for the library. If you since opened the library in iPhoto, run again an Aperture repair.

Then try to rebuild the library by importing it into a new Aperture library. Importing needs plenty of free space. Is there enough free space on your external drive?

Image capture Extension is the correct translation. I never used photostram (to my knowlege) , so that should not be the problem.

I think Apple has some work to do. Its nice if everything is "integrated", but sometimes there are unexpected problems.

I have plenty of space. I will run a rebuild one more time just in case. I removed iPhoto from my computer. When I rebuild from the old Photos file will I lose my ratings? I have been in the process of creating a reference file system, adding new photos in a referenced file, and slowly moving older files to referenced. Does this change your suggestion to rebuild?
