Q: Some Faces under iPhoto now show no photos, despite their being in my library.

I'm running iPhoto 9.6 (that's the update it gave me under Yosemite, although I was running iLife'11 so I'm confused), and Yosemite.  Although all my photos are in the overall library, when I go to Faces and select certain people, whose names and photos are showing on that square button, even though at the top of the window that opens there is a thumbnail of the person,  it shows no photos and says no photos.

It's the same thing. iPhoto 11 was the marketing name, 9.6 is the version.

    Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

    If that fails:

    Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    Regards

Thanks. I tried your Option 2, and it worked!  I do have a couple of related questions:

    1. I took the free trial download.  What might be missing because I didn't purchase the program?

    2. A few times while it was working, it gave me a message that it couldn't import a photo because it wasn't in a readable format. What might it that have been about?

But again, thanks for the solution, which worked!

    1. Yes there are missing features. YOU can compare the versions on the website for the makers.

    2. Images that are damaged in some way.
