Thank you. I have spent several hours going through the steps. When I came to the steps for "Verify Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is Installed", I found the USB driver was not listed under Device Manager, USB controllers (expanded selection). I then followed steps for "If USB driver is not listed" to reinstall device driver, and got the following message:
The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your devices. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems.
The file I found (usbappl64) was in the folder and location specified and is for a 64-bit Windows 7 system which I do have.
Earlier, when I did the check iPod with diagnostic mode, I got the following info: HDD Scan: HDD Pass
SMT Data: retracts 1409, reallocs 0, pending 0 Temp: Cur 32, min 4, max 72
The testing was not exactly as described, perhaps because the iPod Classic is from 2004-05.
Due to the iPod not being recognized in either iTunes or Windows (Computer), I could not do the: Check iPod hard drive for errors, DFU Restore, or Reformat Drive.
There were a few brief instances when the iPod appeared in iTunes and appeared in Computer but then disappeared before any action could be done to restore or reformat drive.
At times after resetting iPod and getting the Apple logo, screen changes and a triangle with exclamation point by iPod image and the text "
www.apple.com/support/ipod" appears.
Found instructions on forum for Removing and reinstalling iTunes and related software components - do you think that would be worth doing?
Thanks for your time ...
