Q: Not Happy, Yosemite killing my new iMac

I have a three month old 21" iMac with 1Gb and 8Gb DDR memory.

 

I updated to Yosemite several days ago and it's dreadful. Everything I do I get a spinning beachball

 

I've given it a few days to settle down but doing anything on it is frustrating.  I've bought this for my business (with Parallels & 8.1) and it's sucking the life out of me.

 

I'm not too technical but I've found the activity monitor and it shows that pretty much all of the RAM is being used.

 

Surely 8Gb of ram is not enough these days?  After spending £1,100 on a computer there's no way I'm buying more RAM....

 

 

Can anyone suggest what is killing my machine?

    Don't look at the RAM, look at the processes using most of the CPU %

    If you are using Parallels, you need to be using version 10

    to insure compatibility with Yosemite.

     

    In 20/20 hindsight, you should have had a complete bootable clone backup

    before doing the upgrade.

     

    As a matter of fact, if you are dependent on your computer for

    your business, this is a must regardless of updates or upgrades as

    anything can and will happen at any time.

    Have the same here with my Macbook Air. 1.3 Ghz and 8GB RAM.

    It seems the whole machine doesn't preform anymore. It looks like a Windows (sorry) machine.

    Problems with Safari, System Preferences. First I thought it had to do with File Vault. But when I disabled it, nothing improved.

    Instead of the update I also started with a clean install, with the same experience. + Some icons in Finder (Download and iCloud Drive) didn't show up. They do in the second level, when searching for a file.

     

    The performance was so bad that I downgrade tot Mavericks and my Mac works like a charme. Waiting for 10.10.x

    Do you folks use a virusscanner, mackeeper or any other software that can be disruptive to the OS?

    I use F-Secure as a virusscanner. I uses this one since Tiger. For the rest plain Mac OS X. Unless Office 2011 is disruptive to the OS

    Same here. My entire Mac barely functions anymore -- it freezes all the time and is extremely slow. The entire screen blinks/flashes whenever I click "Save as" on any type of document. I've run the "Mac Helper" numerous times to clean it and I've deleted all incompatible software but nothing improves it. I want Mavericks or even Mt Lion back!  Does anyone know whether a patch or system upgrade will be available? Has Apple even acknowledged that this is a wide-spread problem?

    I have a 3 month old 27" iMac late 2013 3.2 GHz i5 8GB RAM and Yosemite runs perfectly fine for me.

    What fixed my problem was resetting the PRAM and the SMC. After that I didn't have any problems with Yosemite On my 2012 Macbook Air.
