Q: Not Happy, Yosemite killing my new iMac

I have a three month old 21" iMac with 1Gb and 8Gb DDR memory.

I updated to Yosemite several days ago and it's dreadful. Everything I do I get a spinning beachball

I've given it a few days to settle down but doing anything on it is frustrating.  I've bought this for my business (with Parallels & 8.1) and it's sucking the life out of me.

I'm not too technical but I've found the activity monitor and it shows that pretty much all of the RAM is being used.

Surely 8Gb of ram is not enough these days?  After spending £1,100 on a computer there's no way I'm buying more RAM....

Can anyone suggest what is killing my machine?

Thank you in advance

    1) Paralles 8 is not compatible with 10.10

    2) If you are not a technical person, Yosemite (as great as it is - I love it) it NOT for you.

It requires for you to be able to do A LOT of trouble shooting. Even hacks. There are serious issues with many of its features, WIFI, Bluetooth, Handoff, etc etc. Issues which CAN be dealt with IF you have been used to troubleshooting OS X for a few years. The OS is highly advanced and IMO the best there is but it is no longer - plug-n-play. It is a ferrari that is in constant need of tuning and repair.  I would strongly advise normal folks who want to do normal work like email, text-writing etc... To steer very clear of Yosemite for the time being. At least until all those 100s of issues have been tamed and tuned to 'just work'.

If you wanna give it a serious go...

    1) backup your drive

    2) Wipe/Erase your drive

    3) Clean install 10.10

    4) Make yourself a coffee and take a few days off

    5) Make sure ALL your apps are ready and compatible with Yosemite

    6) Whenever u encounter a problem, google it and try the fix. 99% Chance that there are no problems that you are having that someone else did not already have.

If you don't mind doing this, 10.10 is a very rewarding system. I love it and have been using it as a fully functional system the past month and a half.

It took a lot of sweat and tears but, to me, it was worth it...

Would I install 10.10 on my Mum's, sisters or girlfriend's MacBookPro and expect it to work.... NO WAY !

But that is fairly normal with a new and so advanced system as 10.10 is ;-)

    This is great feedback! Thanks.

Wish I'd read it before clicking "upgrade" when the Apple update prompted me to do it (without realizing what I was getting myself into...)

As a good general rule of thumb... and YES I know that it has been said before ;-)

Do NOT upgrade (Update is OK) to a new Software @ its initial release UNLESS you are highly savvy with Informatics and Troubleshooting.

Apple has SO many computers and setups out there in the real life and have NO possibility of releasing a bug-free first-version of anything.

It is NOT that they don't want to or try to... But the sheer numbers of setups on this planet is just too large to encompass.

Most of the time, the first dot-release will take care of those issues and 'normal folks' can now safely upgrade.

I personally LIKE the risk and I take it every time. I curse, cry, laugh and smile during the initial month or two. And to me it is a part of my life.

But if you don't like such and HAVE a running system providing YOU with all you need to get daily stuff done... For the sake of the Lords... DONT strive to be an early adopter ;-))))

And for those who DO experience bugs... Report them to

    https://www.apple.com/feedback/

They LISTEN and the site is there for a reason MORE than letting users believe that they care.. Because they APPLE do CARE ;-)

Sorry,  but this statement is simply not true.  Yosemite is 10.10.0

Like every other version of OS X, it will take a couple of point releases to resolve existing issues.  (BTW, no different from any other software on the planet)

I do think that all of the connectivity features (handoff, continuity, etc.) will be more difficult to stabilize.

Yosemite has been very stable on my Macbook Air, although I will admit it does not have much 3rd party software installed.

Rant implies anger... and a bit of shouting.

    I was neither...

Factual yes. And if you can find non-truth to what I state, perhaps you could be so polite and point that out so that others and myself,

can actually learn something on this forum.

What I haven't seen here, other than some obvious issues in the Etrecheck report is the question:

    • How much memory and CPUs (threads) did you configure into Parallels Desktop for Windows 8.1?

Configured with too much memory and cpu allocation, the virtual machine will consume the Mac resources and force paging (as we see above) with dramatic machine slowdown. Although 8GB is sufficient, you need to manage it wisely by not automatically launching applications that you could launch and end on demand, or leave multiple large applications open - further stealing available memory. Combined with a wrong parallels configuration, may be what you have now.

Why launch Safari and Mail as login items when they are already in your Dock as a click away? Are the Dropbox and HP applications currently compatible with Yosemite, and why automatically launch the latter? Notice the red flag on the HP IO startup application?

Your version of Sound Flower may be out of date (and particularly the kernel extension) for Yosemite.

How many of those Safari Internet Plug-Ins do you really use?

There is always encouragement that members of the community will post factual, and constructive posts that benefit the original post, and those that read the thread. You could have performed better due diligence in the content of your post, in that it would not have appeared as a wag rant to some, and unhelpful to others — both experienced, and novice.

    Wow...

You've got to be the most angry internet user I have come across.

I am sorry to have ingested my personal experience and opinion into your territory.

Might I suggest that you take a pause collecting points and do a little bit of reading.

Perhaps then you will find that what I write is not meant as a rant but a friendly advice.

Try This after making sure you are on at least latest V9 Parallels which is Compatible with Yosemite.:

    1) Enter the virtual Machine in Paralles and try diff. options of VRAM usage

    If you haven't already:

    1) Delete the contents of the following Folders:

    MacHD/System/Library/Caches

    MacHD/Library/Caches

    Home/Library/Caches

    Home/Library/Saved Application State

    Followed by a reboot

(This will clear all your caches and force them to be rebuilt. Which is something I do every time I experience any kind of problems.)

    After this do

    1) A Safe Boot and Log in

    2) Reboot again with alt+cmd+p+r pressed and held until  you hear start chime twice...

Then check to see if the problem persists..

8GB of RAM should be plenty for running office apps and Parallels...

How full is your hard drive... (You should always leave at least 30% free for Virtual Memory etc to get optimal performance.

Guys, thank you to you all for offering some help, here's an update.  Over a week ago I called Apple support who did some stuff which was basically PRAM x 3, cleared various cache's and any unused programs that I don't use.  Parallels is up to date version 10 and I've deleted Mac for office as I have office on parallels anyway.

As the days have progressed the original problem is surfacing again, so I've done another etrecheck and i'll paste it below.  I'm such a novice to mac's (even though i've had them for 7 years) most of the stuff you offer as help is terrifying for me to even consider attempting!

See if anything below stands out to you,and thanks again for your help
