Q: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Ditto on the issue with the audio being lost on the HDMI monitor. I recently did a full reboot and it currently works ok, but I noticed the other day that all audio was coming out of the Mini and the "HDMI" audio type was missing from the sound options.

Hi Sorry me again, I know the hdmi issue is a pain, but just tried an experiment yes in windows via boot camp but if you have a display port on monitor your better of using that since there is a performance  increase and it solves the sleep wake issue, not the best solution since not everyone has a monitor with a display port...Apple you still need to address this problem....

There are now several posts on the mac mini not just the 2014 model but the 2012 model, from wich there seems a problem with hdmi port, although others have tried workarounds some successful for a WHILE others not so it is up to apple to come up with a proper fix for this. Don't get your hopes up in the near future as I just installed the beta 10.10.1 and its still just as bad. all I can sujest is where possible don't use hdmi but use thunderbolt port to mini display port or with a dvi adapter I know more expence but that works fine for me with no hick upps

Initially I had similar problems with my Mac Mini late 2014 which runs 24/7 and a Panasonic TV but once I changed my energy saver settings to the following I've had no more problems

El Morche, I'm now with your method. Unchecked the  "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off". I'll come back with the update later on.

I have a new mini attached to a sony tv via HDMI. I have the same issue. I found that if the tv is turned on and set to the hdmi display setting before waking the computer it will recognize the display. If there is no TV set to the computer it won't. A solution but shouldn't have to do it that way.

    Hi all,

    No luck.
Tried smashing the keystroke repeatedly as per matt1888 method, still not working on mine.

The working method is, whem the computer sleep (the CPU LED's deeming), punch a single keystroke will wake up the CPU but "Cable disconnected" still appearing on the screen. (smashing keystroke repeatedly does not working for me even in this stage).

I have to turn off and on the power button on the monitor, and puch a single or soflty repeatedly will waking up the monitor.

    oh dear...

I'm having the same exact problem on an HP2311xi monitor. If I use thunderbolt to VGA I get distorted colors on occasion. If I use the HDMI port, the screen doesn't even wake. Frustrating. I may need to swap this new system for an iMac unless I get a resolution (no pun intended lol) to the issue.

    Same issue here.

2014 MacMini connected via HDMI directly to my Sony TV.  Have tried a number of HDMI cables which work fine with other devidces, and none fix the issue on the MacMini.

Nothing wakes up the HDMI port, other than removing the cable and then plugging back in.

Seriously inhibits its usefulness as a media device if I have to cable cycle everytime I want to use.

Mac Mini 2014, Intel Iris graphics card, same problems.

I had the energy saver settings all turned off and it still occurred. Steps to reproduce:

    * Connect Mac Mini to a monitor / TV via HDMI.

    * Turn off monitor / TV for an extended period of time, but leave Mac Mini on.

    * Return a few hours later and the Mac Mini has issues sending a signal over HDMI.

When the Mac Mini was in this state, I swapped out different HDMI cables and the issue would not correct itself. I would turn the monitor / TV off and unplug then reconnect and the issue would not correct itself. I swapped out a different HDMI AND a different monitor / TV and the issue would still not correct itself.

To me, it seems the Mac Mini's graphics controller runs into a memory leak issue if no external source is present for an extended period of time. Possibly related to HDMI's copy protection (HDCP). Searching for this issue turns up thousands of posts from 2012 Mac Mini owners too which seemed to be corrected by a firmware fix at some point. However, Apple seems to have let this bug slip back in. One of the biggest selling features of the Mac Mini is the HDMI port and its media center capabilities. Seeing as many people are running into this issue, and I personally ran into it within a day of use, you have to wonder what type of QA testing Apple puts its machines through.

Somebody please reply to this thread once the issue is fixed.
