Q: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Csound1, it is a new Philips monitor (234E5Q) but the same 'old' problem i.e...it doesn't wake the monitor up. I'm not entirely sure of what version of HDMI it has, but presume between 1.4 and 2.0 as it was manufactured in June '14. Thanks for this tip however, maybe if it is 1.4 even, this is the problem.

1.4 or 2.0 sounds about right, so that's not it.

I called Apple Support (mainly to to just open a case number) about the color distortion on my NEC VGA monitor when I wake my 2014 Mac Mini from sleep (VGA to Mini Display Port). Two days ago, it wouldn't awake from sleep at all but since has returned to awaking with color distortion. The case number is: 732232804. The senior advisor implied that she hadn't heard of this issue before but I mentioned the Apple Community threads documenting it and that there were cases open for it. They had me do some trouble shooting such as resetting the PRAM with no success. Interestingly, when she had me do certain commands after the startup chime (recovery partition=Comm+R, internet recovery=Comm+Opt+R, and Apple Diagnostics=D key), nothing came up on the screen or it incorrectly went to the login screen. Has anyone else with the sleep/wake issue experienced this? The advisor recommended that I talk to NEC to see if there was a driver update and take the Mini into the repair shop for further hardware testing. I spoke to NEC (even though I don't believe the problem lies with the monitor) who said they don't do driver updates for Macs, only Windows. The reason being he stated was that Apple creates the driver updates themselves and provides them in their software updates. I'll be taking the Mini into the repair shop Monday particularly with these startup commands not executing. I emailed the advisor back repeating what NEC said and provided links to the related forum threads and open case numbers.

While it did seem odd that they would ask you to go to NEC for a driver, this is part of the "point the finger, blame the other guy" scenario that most manufacturers will have when they deal with a third party product.  It would be interesting to see if someone with 1 or 2 apple monitors attached has experienced these problems.  Something tells me that with 2 apple monitors attached everything works.

Conspiracy alert! Is this a way for Apple to sway people into buying Apple displays or other displays that licensed thunderbolt tech? Haha But seriously though, this needs to be resolved so I can re-purchase my Mini!

It has been over week since I spoke to the senior Apple adviser.  He had said they would get back to me in a couple of days, but still no word back after taking my system data.  .   Problem remains unsolved

Be proactive, call them.  This is the only way to get the situation resolved.

I have also exactly the same problem with my brand new mac mini (late 2014, 16GB, 2TB Fusiondrive with Yosemite 10.10.1) and Sony Bravia 40 LCD television. They are connected via HDMI.

    Any solutions for the problem?

    Thanks!

I called to follow up and be "proactive" and still no resolution in sight. Quite dissapointing..

Same issue - I have 2 Samsung  S32D850T and did several tests over a month for the Apple senior advisor which were all reviewed by the engineering department. In the end I was told there's no resolution and to keep an eye out for OSX software updates to possibly resolve the issue. VERY disappointed by the outcome as I can't even return the Mac.  I'm using the mini display port (thunderbolt port) to display port (regular size) Case: 714736418

Apple released a fix for Yosemite yesterday. 10.10.2 fixes a host of issues, including (allegedly) the Wifi problems.

Zero impact on the display wake up issues.  As a matter of fact, I can't be totally sure, but I now believe that only the KB will wake up the primary display, the mouse does not seem to do that. And nothing wakes up a secondary display except turning it off and then back on.

Yes, all of my testing so far is showing:

Monitors asleep for a short period of time

Moving mouse does not wake up monitors

Clicking mouse wakes up the primary monitor (on HDMI, does not wake up the displayport monitor)

Monitors asleep for a longer period of time

Moving mouse does not wake up monitors

Clicking mouse does not wake up monitors

That means that in 10.10.2 they did something to the sleep/monitor interaction and that, unfortunately, they made it worse.

That is exactly the issue - well summed.

Note to Apple: Congrats on the $18B in revenue this qtr - can we spend some of that cash haul on fixing this? pretty please.  I have called a number of times, sent you my system data but alas we are still all in pain.

Mac Mini November 2014. Yosemite upgraded to 10.10.2.

Viewsonic VP2770-LED connected to HDMI. Viewsonic input set to HDMI.

Wireless Keyboard and trackpad. Both Apple.

The Yosemite 10.10.2 upgrade solved it for my system

Mac wakes up from deep or short sleep - LED solid - after keyboard press or trackpad click

Viewsonic stays in power saving mode (LED turns from amber to blue)
