Q: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Whoa whoa whoa... So it now works for you? HDMI connected monitor wakes up from sleep like a normal computer? Is this regardless of how long the computer/monitor has been asleep? And we're talking HDMI to HDMI, right?

hmm could be time to re-buy a mini?

    Just to clarify

Mac Mini November 2014. Yosemite upgraded to 10.10.2.

Viewsonic VP2770-LED connected HDMI(mac) to HDMI(Monitor). Connected with an Amazon Basics HDMI cable

    Viewsonic input set to HDMI.

Wireless Keyboard and trackpad. Both Apple.

The Yosemite 10.10.2 upgrade solved it for my single monitor system.

Mac wakes up from deep (LED off) or short(LED pulsing) sleeps to  LED solid - after keyboard press or trackpad click

Viewsonic comes out of  power saving mode (LED turns from amber to blue)

So it now behaves in the same way as my 2012 Mini - also on 10.2.2. Although this one had always behaved as expected.

I can also confirm that after updating to 10.10.2,  my Mac Mini 2014 wakes the monitor using either the track pad or keyboard after several hours of sleep

    Setup:

    1. LG 32" LED Display (32LB5600)
    2. Mac mini 2014 - HDMI to HDMI#1
    3. Mac book Pro 2013 - HDMI to HDMI #2

The MBP never had an issue of waking the monitor on 10.10.1.   The Mac Mini is now working as expected using an HDMI to HDMI directional cable, in the same way my Mac Mini 2010 did.

    Thanks Apple.

Asus al1751 with brand new mini. Connected via hdmi cable and dvi-d adaptor.   The same problem with no wake up.

Today changed to hdmi - dvi-d cable (no adaptor) works like a charm!

Can anyone verify that mini displayport is waking their monitor up in any combination?

I have no issue with the HDMI to DVI, that has always worked and continues to work.  If I can find a combination that allows both monitors to wake up I would be eternally happy.  You know, the way that EVERY OTHER STINKING COMPUTER WORKS SINCE 2001.

Ok. Well, I think I will go to the store and finally re-buy a Mini. Will report back here with results later!

Just turned on my re-bought Mini and updated right away to 10.10.2...

So far, SUCCESS! And after only a month!

Oh well... anyway, Mini HDMI to Monitor HDMI

Mouse click - Monitor wakes up

Keyboard key - Monitor wakes up

Mind you, this is only after a short period of sleep... hopefully all goes well tomorrow, and after that, and after that, and after that!

I installed 10.10.2 this week and the patch finally solved this problem on my Acer S276HL monitor.

Now when the system is sleeping, I press a key, the Mini wakes up and 1-2 seconds afterwards the monitor comes out of sleep mode all on its own - like it should do.

Yes, it seems that the problem disappeared after installing the latest Yosemite 10.10.2 upgrade. Great!

Athletejmv: Have you updated to 10.10.2? I was curious if you had and if it resolved the VGA to MDP color distortion issue. I use a VGA to MDP adapter also and after updating to 10.10.2 I continued to see the screen distortion issue upon wakeup. It's intermittent though. I can go a week with no problems and then it acts up.

I Still have not had success after updating to 10.10.2. I have a Mac mini connected to a display through HDMI to dvi that works fine. However, my projector that is hooked up by Mini Display Port to VGA still does not wake from sleep.

After upgrading to Yosemite 10.2, when the Mac mini is brought out of sleep mode, the monitor is as well, but to a screen of static. I still have to hit the mode button to cycle from VGA to digital, before the proper screen is displayed. I'm connected to the Thunderbolt 2 port. I'll try the HDMI port and if I get the same results, I'll reopen my support case.

Same results on the hdmi port: Mac mini wake up causes monitor to wake up, but display snow until I press the Mode button and cycle from VGA back to digital. Apple support chat appears to be down today, so I haven't been able to follow up on my case.

This is finally working for me.

Primary monitor on displayport with displayport > HDMI  converter to HDMI > DVI cable

Secondary monitor on HDMI with an HDMI cable

Several other combinations were not consistently working.
