Q: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

AustinBike, I'm glad you finally found a workable solution.

To anyone who is still experiencing the sleep/wake issue with a VGA to MDP connection and your Mini is still under warranty, I would recommend you open a case with Apple Support if you haven't already done so. The more customers they hear from, the more likely they'll provide a fix as was done with the HDMI connection.

Now works for me BUT on wake up my hard drives have all apparently not been ejected properly. I'm off to find another forum...

I have one monitor plugged to thunderbolt->VGA connector and the other one to hdmi->DVI.

The one that is connected to VGA wakes every time. But the one that is connected to DVI requires some magic to wake up: either reboot or unplug both monitors, plug VGA back in, wait for 2-3 seconds, plug DVI.

Mac mini 2011, with Yosemite 10.10.2.

The problem only appeared after I installed the update and switched hibernate mode to 1 (hibernate instead of safe sleep). With hibernate mode 3 everything is ok, but I can't really use it.

Is there any working fix for this problem yet?

i have 2014 late mac mini and philips 50puk6809 4k tv but i thing same problem i have after update yosemite 10.10.2

before workin at 1080p - 60Hz but after update now just working at 1920*1080 - 30Hz

Ok, so here's the setup: Mac Mini HDMI > Monitor HDMI

OSX is set to require a password on wake after 5 min

If the Mini is woken up from sleep, the monitor wakes up ok. Enter a password, and everything's fine.

HOWEVER, if you wake up the Mini and do not enter a password, the Mini will effectively then go back to sleep. Try to wake it up again, and we're back to the same problem as before (Mini won't wake up monitor). I know the computer is awake because Spotify was open, and when I clicked the spacebar, music would play/pause. One thing to note is that, the music was then playing through the internal Mini speakers, and no longer through my monitor's speakers. This could only mean that the HDMI signal is completely dropped after being awoken from sleep.

Can anyone else confirm?

I guess the work around is to never require a password after being awoken from sleep. But again, this is a workaround, and hardly a 'just-works' philosophy.

Same problem here with my brand new Mac mini i5 2,8ghz connected thru hdmi to an asus vw266h, most of the time the monitor does not wake up, I need to power off and on the Mac .... This monitor works great with a pc with windows 7, no wake up problem.

I have tried all the nvram/SMS/reinstall/Yosemite 10.10.0/10.10.1/10.10.2, no solution.

I bought a hdmi to DVI cable and the problem is gone, hope 10.10.3 will have a fix so I will be able to connect thru hdmi.

Same thing happened to me. I have a mac Mini Server 2013 model i guess.  I just got 2  23" Acer Monitors together, one connected through the thunderbolt-DVI adapter and the other one though HDMI cable.  When getting back from sleep the Thunderbolt-DVI monitor turn on immediately but the HDMI won't, I have to turn it off and on and it works (very annoying).

I FOUND THE SOLUTION for me at least; I replaced the HDMI cable with a HDMI to DVI cable and it works perfect now. Both monitors wake up as if they had a night full of sleep! This might not be the ideal solution if you run sound through your monitor/TV with the HDMI cable but for me works perfect since I run all the sound from my Mixer-Interface to my studio monitors.  Let me know if this helps.

We're having the exact same problems so many of you are having.

My mother needed a new computer, and thought she wanted a Mac, so about 3 or 4 weeks ago we drove to the closest Apple store and bought her a new Mac Mini 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 upgraded to 8GB RAM. The simple upgrade in RAM required a special order that took a week to arrive. Right out of the box on first boot, the unit made a sound consistent with a failing hard drive. I press on and use the Mail app to sync her email accounts with the auto setup function. We start talking, the unit goes to sleep, then when it wakes we get the "technicolor rainbow nightmare" (see below). I reboot, put the computer to sleep as a test, try to wake it - same issue. Apple says to send the unit back.

After several days with no computer, a new-to-us unit arrives at our door. I sync her mail accounts, and all her inboxes are empty save for the couple of messages that came after we sent in the old unit - the auto setup function in the Mail App used the POP3 protocol to push her mail even though they are IMAP accounts, I surmise. Several years worth of messages, photos, etc. deleted, and Apple support (while honestly very friendly and genuinely appearing to be working hard to help us) tells us in so many words we are up a creek without a paddle. To Apple's credit, they offered us an external hard drive for future backups that they value at $149.99 (a comparable unit is currently bundled with Adobe Lightroom software for only $99). To make matters worse, the new unit goes to sleep, we wake it up, and BAM... technicolor rainbow nightmare. The issue is now intermittent - sometimes it successfully wakes - but that is not acceptable for a new $600 computer given her needs. My mother believed the hype that Mac's were easier and "just work", and we bought Apple Care Support at $99 anyway so she can take it in and get help.

My mother schedules an appointment at the Apple store to diagnose her issue, and the "genius" tells her that it's probably the (slightly) older Apple 22" HD LCD monitor we are using, i.e., buy a new monitor from us you sucker (this is after he starts the conversation by telling her she has 15 minutes with him and the clock is ticking... she paid $99 for this?). I do a simple Google search for "mac mini sleep mode monitor glitch" and find scores of results including this thread where I find this is a very well documented issue on APPLE'S OWN PUBLIC FORUMS. How does a simple Google search beat a genius?

Below is the "technicolor rainbow nightmare"; the image on the left is from the first unit we received, the image on the right the second unit. Needless to say, we are starting the process of getting a refund. This has been an unbelievably bad experience for us. Obviously not everyone has such a bad experience with Mac, but this has been far more painful for us than I could have ever imagined. I sincerely hope we have no trouble receiving a refund.

Thank you VictorMaitland for posting these photos as I haven't seen anyone else mention this problem with Apple monitors. My color distortion happens intermittently also, and both times I took it into the repair shop it would repeatedly wake up from sleep just fine. There's nothing they can do unless the problem can be duplicated in the shop so they can see it. They did offer to check it in and do some tests, but I'm not sure there's anything they can do on their end.

I had the same problem, as have others, as reported here -- Screen corruption  As long as you're within your 14 day, no questions asked, window you should have no problem returning it. Since you had to replace it right away, your purchase date will be different from how long you actually had a mini in your possession. Call apple and document everything.

As an aside -- The phone support from Apple was excellent for me. At times it was repetitive but it was refreshing to get comprehend-able, honest effort (even if not fully knowledgeable) and manners from phone support.

I have the same issue as guys above. My Mac mini 2014 is connected to a HDTV (Panasonic Plasma) via HDMI 1.4.

It happens on random, but only after waking from sleep (or deep sleep). I'd say 1 in a 20 wake-ups.

Since it's so darn unpredictable I'm hesitant to send it back for service (I don't think they will test it that extensively to catch the problem). They will probably blame it on the bad cable (I tested with a couple), TV or bad luck

What I noticed, and what is interesting is that when I go into color profiles and poke around (change to Adobe RGB for example), it switches back to normal. Rebooting and upluging HDMI cable does the trick as well.

It makes me wonder whether the color profiles that Mac assigns to the TV are corrupted.

Any advice would be appreciated guys. Photos below.

Don't know if this will help some or not but it's seemed to help me. I'm using a 2014 Mac Mini 2.6, 256 SSD, Yosemite 10.10.2, with two 51" Samsung plasma tv's as monitors. Bought one in October for use with my old iMac and bought the second this month to use with the new Mini. (They were both on clearance for dirt cheap). Right away I started experiencing this "no wake from sleep" issue. While searching for this problem on the web I came across someone who was also using two Samsung tv's for monitors. He looked in the Samsung owners manual and found a hook up description saying to plug the computer into the #2 port (on my tv's it's labeled #2, HDMI/DVI). I was using the #1 port on both. I made the switch and my monitors wake from sleep now every time.

Hope this will be of some help to some of you at least.

However, I am still having trouble with both monitors power cycling off and on every once in a while at random, maybe once every couple of days. They do it at the same time. Also, after cycling back on the last time I got the messed up "Technicolor" pictures that Tumcubus and Victor mentioned.  I will monitor this issue and be getting back to Applecare to see if they can help.

Be aware this is on a Mac Pro late 2013, thunderbolt MDP to VGA adapter, the external monitor is Acer p223w. The rainbow colors first appeared after waking up from sleep, which is why I'm posting in this thread, although you are reporting from Mac minis. First time this happened I could switch to dvi for a second and the colors turned normal again. But the insane part is, the second time it happened, the technicolor rainbow stayed, even after restarts, pram reset, everything.

Its almost like the Mac pro changed the display somehow. Even if I power on the display with no connection to the Mac , the acer start screen is all messed up, colorwise.

I'm still almost certain this is related to your problem, as it occurred after waking up from sleep...

Don't know what to do.

If you're still covered under AppleCare, make sure you start a case with them.

I would try the monitor with another Mac and see what happens.

I would also start a new thread (and suggest others with the "rainbow colors" start a new thread here in the Mac mini forum) in the Mac Pro forum to see if anyone else is having the same issue there. It's much more likely to get proper attention as it's a new thread and it's for folks with the same machine you own and it's not buried in a thread that's 13 pages long.
