Q: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Yosemite 10.10.1 released 11/17/2014 should fix this issue:

    • Addresses an issue that could prevent some Mac mini computers from waking from sleep

10.10.1 did not solve this problem for me. Not very happy.

My Dell monitor still doesn't wake up after the screen goes to sleep but the Mac is stil playing music or something.

Works... I have the new 2014 mini.. second one up with the iris processor. I started the TV up three times and hit the return key each time the mini went to sleep. Each time it promptly awakened. That didn't happen before. I always had to unplug/plug in the hdmi cable.

So.. working on an iris graphics late 2014 mini with Sony Bravia TV via hdmi

Yes! It does work. Everyone on this thread should update their OS asap to 10.10.1, as it definitely fixes the wake issue with HDMI.

It has been hit or miss from my experience after the update.  I've got a 2014 i7 3GHz Mac Mini.  At first it was doing great, no waking issues, but occasionally I have to still power cycle my receiver and/or TV after either moving the mouse or using the keyboard.  Today I've experienced graphical artefacts and screen flashing to black, which previous to this update I hadn't seen.

Yeah, I'm really sorry to say that after testing for a little longer I found that 10.10.1 does not work consistently. This is so frustrating. Why are Apple not able to roll out a robust fix for this issue?! Seems like such a simple piece of functionality for a computer which fundamentally relies on having an external monitor. I'm really disappointed with the Mac mini so far, no least because it crashes every time I restart it as well. So many issues.

I Have an HP w2338h and I have the same issue with my new mini not waking the monitor. I have to turn the monitor off and on again to get it to come back.  Very frustrating from a former pc owner. Thought Apple was the "be all end all", but thhis is a simple thing that should work.... Oh and this is with the 10.10.1 update installed as well...

Try this as a not too arduous workaround. Go to System Prefs/Security/General. Set the Mac to require a password on wake up "immediately".

    Worked for me

I also installed 10.10.1 but the problem remains. Will try JustMeandTheDog's suggestion on requiring password immediately next.

Well, I switched from an HDMI cable to a VGA and that works a LOT better. The display does not come back when I move the mouse, but if I hit a key on the keyboard, the display wakes in 1-2 seconds. That's much better than not waking at all, plus I think the monitor is performing better as well. Go figure... Hope this helps someone else.... Still, I hope this is something Apple will fix soon...

I find that if I do these things... mini connected via hdmi to tv.

I wake the mini up first by hitting the return key and give it a moment.

    and or

If the screen is blank I go to another hdmi connection on the tv then back to hdmi 1 which is the one the mini is connected to.

    I usually get results.

I confirm the same issue when using new Mac Mini (Yosemite 10.10.1) and AOC external monitor connected through HDMI.

More than 1 month passed since Yosemite was released and no patch for this bug so far.

I hope it is not a hardware issue and a solution will be provided soon, otherwise I'll consider complaining my Mac to reclaim my money.

    Apple, shame on you!

Again... If using the new mini with a TV.. after a few weeks of using it this way I've had success each time. Hit return before going to your hdmi connection on the TV. If it's still not awake use the display button on the tv remote to move to another hdmi source. Then move back to the hdmi port that the mini is connected to. Simple if not a bit annoying but it's worked a dozen times in a row for me now.

Just add me to the list--new, 2014 Mac Mini that when waking up from sleep will not reliably wake the HDMI connection to a TV. And given that the sole purpose of the this Mini is to stream video to the TV, that pretty much ***ks. It's particularly frustrating because a 3rd gen Apple TV connected by HDMI to the same TV has zero problems waking up the TV. ZERO!

I have had about a 60% success rate by first waking the Mini (typing a character on the keyboard connected to it), waiting a few seconds, and then cycling through all the inputs on the TV. Other times I need to reboot the Mini.

Given the other things I've read in these forums about other wake-up related problems on the 2014 Mini, I have to wonder how seriously Apple takes this little desktop computer.

I have the same generation of Mini and Apple TV as you and have similar problems.  I have tried an SMC reset (basically removing the power cable from the Mini for a minute or two and plugging it back in), which worked for a few days, but still have the same Mini specific issue.  My previous Mac was connected to the same receiver via DVI to HDMI (but it was running 10.6) and had no issues at all, so I don't believe that it's my receiver or other hardware.  My ATV3 has been rock solid with no issues like this.  The only things that I can do to wake it up are exactly what you are doing, ie, switching HDMIs around and/or power cycling.  At this point, I'm waiting for another update from Apple to remedy the issue, as 10.10.1 did not fix it.
