Pretty much depends on why iPhoto is crashing. Can you give us any details? Can you open  Library made in 9.6 for instance? Are there any crash reports?

    Hi Terence

Basically I have all my libraries from I photo stored in a Time Capsule, and they are not to big

because I splited them by years.

I have been created with iphoto 8.1.2 intalled in my old macbook. When I open these

libraries with iphoto 8.1.2 the libraries are just fine.

The problem starts when with my new MacBook Pro (Retina) with OX yosemite 10.10 and iphoto 9.6 I want to open

    the old libraries.

There is a message stating that libraries require to be ubgraded and the process might take 1 hour depending on

the size of the library. After I press the OK to ubgrade the library, it starts the procedure analyzing the library

and after 2 minuts, i photo disapears from the screen and I have to switch it off again if I want to keep working with

I photo ( of course, not with the old libraries)

I don't know how to upgrade the old libraries, perhaps Yosemite and iphoto 9.6 can not upgrade libraries

created by iphoto 8.1.2., or perhaps I should export all the photos and import again in the new version,

but this could take a lot of time.

Best regards and thank you for your help

    Ramon

How are you connecting to the Time Machine? It needs to be a wired connection.

Are these TimeMachine backups? or are you using it simply as an external hard drive rather than a TM backup device?

What version of iPhoto we're the libraries created with?

And note for the future that generally there are no advantages of having many small libraries rather than one large one and there are major disadvantages

yes, I am using wifi for both:

The one working for the old Macbooc with iphoto 8.1.2

The one not working with MacBook Pro (Retina) with OX yosemite 10.10 and iphoto 9.6

I can try now with cable to see what happens

NO they are not time machine backups, I am using the time capsule

just as a hard drive to store the i-photo libraries, to free space in my computer.

The reson to use small libraries was because for my old mac was taking too long

to open a single library will all fotos from the timecapsule by wifi.

That's the reson why I was creating a photo library each year.

I am not sure the version of iphoto I created them as since 2009 when I bough

the macbook i upgraded the OS several times and probably there were several

upgrades of the iphoto version. I guess depending on the year I started the library

it was created with different versions, but I can open all of them with iphoto 8.1.2.

    and it is working fine.

I am using the time capsule

just as a hard drive to store the i-photo libraries, to free space in my computer.

But Time Capsules is a network volume and not directly connected. And neither is the filesystem on a Time Capsule MacOS Extended (Journaled).  You are storing the iPhoto Libraries on a volume, that is not supported for iPhoto.

Before you use any iPhoto library, move it to a directly connected drive, formatted MAcOS Extended (Journaled).  You are risking data loss on a drive with a different file system or a network drive.

And how are you backing up the libraries on the Time Capsule? Time Machine cannot back them up, if they are on the Time Machine drive.

but I can open all of them with iphoto 8.1.2.

    and it is working fine.

You have been very lucky. iPhoto 8.1.2 did not check the file system for compatibility and just opened the libraries, but that may have resulted in library corruption. It is just not safe.

Apple says:  Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library , and this holds for iPhoto Libraries as well, since both apps can share their libraries.

Or see this link:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives

    Note the last sentence:

Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.

    Resolution

iPhoto libraries should be stored on a locally mounted Mac OS X Extended drive for best performance.

    Hi léonie

Thanks, I didn't know it was not supported, as it has been working very well for the past 5 years

with iphoto 8.1.2.There was no way to store all this amount of photos in the Macbook, and

I just created the libraries into the time capsule using iphoto 8.1.2. or earlier versions.

To backup the time capsule libraries I use to just copy the libraries directly into another hard drive.

Tomorrow I will buy a USB cable to connect Time Machine directly by cable with the new

MacBook Pro (Retina) with OX yosemite 10.10 and iphoto 9.6

and I will let you know if I can upgrade the libraries this way, or directly from the Time capsule folders,

or by copying the libraries to the MacBook hard drive and trying to upgrade them from there.

I'll let you know next week

    Thank you very much.

    Best

    Hi Léonie

I just copied a library into the hard drive and I was able to upgrade the library.

Thank you very much. tomorrow I will try to do it directly from the timecapsule

connected by USB and I will let you know.

    Thank you very much.
