MS office runs very slow

I have got Microsoft office 2008 installed on my Mac Book Pro ( student edition). All the word/ excel documents open up very slow and takes a long time. And most of the times, the buffering sign appears. Many a times, the programs crashes and then have to force quit.

This problem has become more acute after installation of OSX Yosemite on my MAC

Pl advise.

that's not very encouraging. no offers of help since October 2014. About the only thing about this problem I know is NOT to download any of those pop-up ads on the web which say "clean up your mac". If apple can't tell me how to clean up my mac and speed up essential programs like MS Office, we are in bad shape.

I have the same issue. I run OS 10.10.4 (Yosemite) and MS Office 2008 and Entourage and Word have been particularly slow. It can take 15 seconds just to open a document. OK, so it's not the latest MS Office, but I don't want to upgrade unless I am sure it will solve the problem.

I suspect you have some third-party utility issue working against you. We have Office 2008 on my 2010 iMac running 10.9, my wife's 2011 iMac running 10.10, and my 2012 MacBook. All three run fine. The only difference is that the launch time for each Office component is slightly longer than it was under 10.6.8, but not enough to bother me.

My first guess is that you have some anti-virus program installed. There are no "pay-for" AV packaged that will not drag down performance. Also, so-called cleaning/optimization/tune-up" apps are notorious performance killers. Things like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, Tune-upMy Mac, etc are useless except as a means to make your computer slowly.

If you are not sure what is lurking on your system, you can safely give us a snapshot. Please download and install this free utility:

Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.

Thanks Allan. I have done as you suggested. I only installed AV software (Avast) yesterday (which found and zapped some malware for ads, no difference in speeds notice) and have never downloaded any "clean up your mac" programs. I always update the software with Software Update, apart from updates to things I don't use, e.g. iPhone, iPhoto, Mail, etc.

Regards.

Thanks Cabakroll. My Mac --MS Office 2008 in particular --was already running very slow before I installed Avast, which I thought could help cure the problem. I then received the advice that Sophos was better, and so uninstalled Avast and put in Sophos. Some minor Adware and Malware programs had got on the machine, and these are gone now, but there is no difference to the overall slowness of the machine.

All MS Office applications take way too long to open, to open files, to save them, and everything else. I had a paid-for IT guy come and try and help me, but all he could do was install OnyX, tell me not to run so many programs together (I am a journalist -- I can't work unless Word, Entourage, Skype, Safari are all running at the same time) and to clear caches from time to time, all of which I already do.

Someone suggested that if I upgraded to 8Gb memory from 4Gb that might help.

Sep 3, 2015 11:04 AM in response to cabakroll

I used to be on PCs and came to Mac 7 years ago and slightly distrusted Applemail. Probably no good reason for that. I have thousands of emails I need to be able to search through from time to time and Entourage does that fairly well while AOL on the web does it very poorly. LibreOffice, which I hadn't heard of before certainly looks good. I guess it's time for me to consider getting a new machine and whether I really need the latest MS Office or not and what my software needs really are, rather than just putting up with what I have got. Thanks to you and all here for the help; I find these consultations very helpful.

Yosemite, Office, and 4GB of RAM aren’t going to get along very well. I had a 2009 MBP with 8GB of RAM which handled Office 2008 and later Office 2011 very well. When I swapped out the hard drive for an SSD the computer seemed brand new again. I also noticed lots of items in your EtreCheck list that aren’t good. Totiteck is malware and isn’t helping matters. The items that are listed as killed or failed probably failed or were killed due to memory pressure.

MS office runs very slow
