Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive

2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.

Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Control (right) - click on your hard drive's icon on the Desktop and select Show Info from the contextual menu that appears. The Info window will show the Available (free) space.

Does Disk Utility see the drive? It can tell you the amount of free space. Select the drive in the left hand pane of DU and look at the bottom of the DU window for the info.
