    Hi,

iChat is an app that comes with the Mac OS up until Lion (OS X 10.7.x) where it is iChat 6.

You list having iOS 8 and not any Mac OS.

At Mountain Lion the app gets called Messages but retains many iChat features whilst Adding the iMessages account.

iPhones, iPads and some iPod Touch devices can use the Messages app in iOS.

A common issue with Messages across Mountain Lion and Mavericks  is that the iMessages account will not connect.

Try restarting the computer if we are talking about the Mac version.

    Hi,

    I am still left guessing.

The app on the iPhone is called Messages and sends and registers with the iMessages servers and can also send SMS messages.

The Mac version can have several Account of which the iMessages is one.

You still have not said which and only list iOS products.

However for the Mac version Apple have this Doc FaceTime, Game Center, Messages: Troubleshooting sign in issues

My mind reading skill lead me to think you meant the last rather than the iPod Touch.

    Hi,

iChat is an app that is free with several of the OS X versions from Panther (OS X 10.2 through Lion (OS X 10.7)

That is to say it is included in those versions. However some of those OS X versions cost.

Messages 7 (the numbering continues on from iChat 6 in Lion) in Mountain Lion and Messages 8 in Mavericks are also included in an OS X  install.

Unlike earlier versions Messages 8 does not get sub-number versions  (it remains "Messages 8" rather than becoming Messages 8.0.1 or 8.0.2 as iChat and Messages 7 did).

For some reason Messages in Yosemite also is numbered as Messages 8 despite significant changes to the layout and the types of preferences and settings that have changed.

The "cost" if any can be laid at the apps door is that it does use the Internet which you are probably having to pay for.
