IOS 8.1 Rotation Issue / Accelerometer Issue (Iphone 6)

Phone: iPhone 6, 64GB (white/silver)

iOS: (now) iOS 8.1

Sync: I sync with my Mac (Macbook Pro, 2014, OSX Yosemite) and iTunes, updating my phone is done via iTunes, not a "stand alone update".

When I got my iPhone 6 it ran iOS 8.0.2 and I was a happy camper. Everything was okay. After upgrading to iOS 8.1 after the keynote somehow my iPhone is stuck in Portrait mode: I am unable to

a) rotate my iPhone in Safari

b) take landscape pictures the "normal" way (I can take 'm, but need to rotate them afterwards on the Mac)

c) use the compass app (no calibration possible)

d) use any app which uses the accelerometer

Especially item C is really a dead giveaway : calibration does not work...

- Can anyone help me "what to do" (apart from forcing downgrades to 8.0.2);

- Can anyone tell me if they have also this issue when running 8.1;

As far as I know (because it worked before) this is NOT a hardware issue, because it worked before... (and now they "fixed" it for iPads in 8.1, it's broken on mine)

I tried:

- soft reset (turn on and off with the slider)

- hard reset (press home + off button until the phone dies)

- reset all settings

- wipe complete phone and reinstall as a new phone (no content whatsoever)

- restore my iphone

... nothing worked 😟

Apple, please fix this: it's a small issue but oh so annoying.

I have the same problem with my iPad air 2... just bought it today and the screen rotation is not working as it should work.

Have you tried swiping up from the bottom side of the phone and unlock orientation lock? If not, then try it. Otherwise, it is an iOS 8.1 bug...

just go to apple and replace it. thats what i did with my iPad. There seems to be a gyrometer problem

This problem started for me on my Ipad mini 2 ever since I updated to IOS 8 and also carried over to my new Iphone 6.

IOS 8.1 did not fix it.

I mainly notice this problem when using Whatsapp or clash of clans. When I open the application it will sometimes be in the wrong orientation and when I rotate the phone it will not rotate, what usually fixes it for me is if I double click my home button and go into multi tasking mode and then go back. I also noticed a video recording in the wrong orientation one time.

I would have blamed a hardware defect if it were not for my ipad having the same problem, which it did not have before.

I have the same issue and I'm trying to understand if this is a HW problem.

I have observed a similar behavior while using latest iOS 7 as well.

could it be a magnetism issue provoked by the magnetic clip on the iPad cover?

I read somewhere that there could be a calibration issue caused by magnetic interference and a drain of the battery might solve it (didn't try yet).

did anybody get to a conclusion? do I need to get my iPad replaced? did Apple make a statement regarding this? I found nothing helpful yet.

I can say for sure its not related to the cover because I have the same problem on my iphone 6.

And I can also say with certainty that in my case it is not hardware related at least in the case of my ipad mini because I did not have the issue before ios 8.

Would be a good idea to submit a bug report about this to apple. Im going to do it today.

This is the solution I followed: contact Apple & ask for a replacement: but note this: contact Apple within 14 days of your purchase, otherwise there could be a discussion about it. Now with a new iPhone, everything works as promised.

I also made a bug report. The Apple tech however said it was a combination hardware / software, so... It could be that the update broke a hardware-component (or so he said)

Well seeing as I don't have an apple store locally I'll be trying to bring it to an apple store when I'm in the states in April. 14 days are long gone anyway.

I find it hard to believe that it's a hardware issue though seeing as I have the exact same problem on both my iphone and Ipad (which did not have it pre ios8)

Also, my issue seems to be quickly fixed by double tapping the home button to bring up the multitasking menu. When I do that, the app in question will rotate correctly in the preview window. That also shows me that it is most likely not a hardware problem.
