Q: Apple TV keeps disconnecting since last update

I've been using my Apple TV for months, and it was working perfectly. But since the last update, version 7.0.1, my Apple TV is totally useless : I can still send a video with AirPlay, but it keeps disconnecting after less than a minute watching. I tried to update my iPad/iPhone to the last version of iOS8, but with no success. How come Apple could break something who was working so well with a bad update like this one?

Same thing here with 7.0.2.  Maybe if enough people report in Apple will decide that maybe it isn't all of our networks afterall...    <sigh>

A little additional info... my son hasn't upgraded his iPad 3 so he's still running iOS 7 and this problem NEVER happens to him.  The other two iPads in my house (iPad Mini and iPad Air) have been upgraded to iOS 8 and they BOTH have constant Airplay Apple TV disconnects.

Still not working under 7.0.2  I think Apple only cares about dollars these days.

I never owned an Apple product until the original iPad was released. Since that time I've purchased five various iPads, two MacBook Airs, an iMac, two iPod Touch fifth gens, two iPhone 5s' and developed three apps currently in the App Store. While the hardware quality has always remained very high, during that time there has been a noticeable drop in the quality of the software. I don't know if the problem is their heavy reliance on developers and customers to find their issues with the beta releases, or if they have lost key software people, or if the loss of intimidation to “get it right the first time” from Steve Jobs is the problem. But they need to figure it out before the “non-fanboy” customers like me who purchase Apple products because “they just work” decide that if they don't just work anymore we might as well explore alternatives.

I finally took the chance and upgraded (using the Apple TV "restore" process) to 7.0.2 on my original version Apple TV 3 yesterday. The Ethernet connection problem and the video streaming "drop" seem to have been resolved for me.

Same issue here. ATV 3 with 7.0.1. Connected via wired Ethernet. When streaming video from any of the ATV apps, the video will play for a few minutes and then disconnect. I'm sent back out to the main menu. Sometimes I can immediately restart the video with no issues. Other times I'll get a message saying that I'm not connected to the network, or that the ATV can't connect to the iTunes Store, or that the app is currently unavailable.

As mentioned earlier, this applies to content viewed directly on the ATV. I don't use AirPlay or stream content from iTunes very often, so I can't speak to the reliability of those. However, it seems that viewing content from one of the apps on the ATV would be the most reliable since there are fewer components needed for it to work (i.e., all you need is the ATV and an Internet connection).

Another oddity is that if I unplug the Ethernet cable and let the ATV connect via WiFi, the disconnections occur much less frequently.

All of this has started happening only in the past month (November 2014) after the latest firmware upgrade.

This is happening to all of my AppleTV's running 7.0.2 - whether wired in with ethernet or wireless, the device simply will not show up under the AirPlay menu on any iOS device I have. I've tried iPhones and iPads running iOS 7 and 8 and nope, these AppleTV's simply won't show up.

Factory re-setting them has absolutely no affect, and no amount of restarting them resolves the issue. This wouldn't have happened if not for the fact that a power surge caused a number of them to blackout, forcing me to factory restore them to the latest version from iTunes. This is absolute rubbish and needs to be fixed. It is not a coincidence that this began happening immediately after updating to v7.X.X

Still not solved. I've been forced to go through third party websites to watch the series I previously bought season passes for in order to connect my Macbook Pro to the TV through an HDMI cable, since iTunes ALSO doesn't play right on the TV when plugged through an HDMI cable directly... pointless to have ATV AND waste of Season passes!!

I Just started having this problem, too. Whatever I'm playing using Appletv stops after about 10 minutes. Returns to main menu, have to find my place and restart. This happens on 2 different Apple TVs, and all the other devices on my network are working just fine.

I Haven't tried AirPlay yet Since this started.

Reading this thread is discouraging, since apparently this has been going on for awhile. For my purposes it pretty much makes the device useless.

i Was just about to buy another AppleTV, guess I will look at a Roku instead.

Sorry for the random capitalization, I'm typing this on an iPad.

edit: I did try restarting the ATVs . Made no difference.

I was finally able to get my Apple TV to work again.  I talked to a tech and they had me do a full restore of the Apple TV.  I also had to put the ip address of my apple tv in the DMZ of my router.  I'm not sure which one of those resolved the issue but I no longer have a problem.

Not sure I understand why, but this post describing the DMZ approach worked perfectly for me. Now running firmware 7.0.2 on Apple TV 3 with no drops - in fact, streaming performance seems improved.

I also had AirPlay cutting out every 5-10 minutes from multiple devices, and I tried many things: doing a wifi scan and changing channels, updating/restarting Apple TV and devices I was doing AirPlay from (Macbook, iPhone, iPad).  But what solved it for me was a physical power cycle of my Airport (even though I had previously changed settings on the Airport and thought it was essentially restarting when it would be unavailable when "updating settings").

Same problem for me tonight. Rented a film from iTunes. Seems to be nicely buffered then it cuts out with a message saying ATV has no network conection. I'd have thought the film would have kept running until it reached a point where it needed to buffer before dropping off. Isn't that how buffering is supposed to work or have I got it wrong?

Same problem. I use airplay to display content from my Macbook and it keeps disconnecting very few minutes. It used to work perfectly. Very frustrating when you are making a presentation to a group!

I did a full restore of my AppleTV which fixed the problem. It wasn't a networking issue.
