TFT LCD = Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display. There is a separate transistor, made from a thin film of silicon deposited on the glass behind each dot on the screen. This transistor controls the dot, and keeps it in the same state until it is refreshed, 1/60th of a second later. All modern LCD displays use TFT. Older LCDs used multiplexing that only gave each dot a short pulse every 60th of a second. They were cheaper to make but were inferior in every other respect.
