Q: Downloading Aperture onto another computer.

I have Aperture 3.5.1 on my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.5). Can I also download it onto my iMac (10.9.2) BUT I don't want to share libraries? If so, how do I do it?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), Aperture

You should have asked a week ago, before the new Aperture version has been released. I am not sure, if it will work now without upgrading to Yosemite.

Yes, if you own Aperture 3.5.1, you are entitled to install it on any Mac you own or control for private purposes.

    Try this:

    • On your iMac launch the AppStore, go to the "Store" menu,
    • sign into the AppStore with the same AppleID you are using on your MacBook Pro.
    • Open the "Purchased" tab. Is Aperture listed among your Purchases? Then click the "Install" button.

BUT I don't want to share libraries?

As to the Aperture library: Sharing libraries requires them to be installed on an external drive, that you plug alternately into the two machines. If you want a local library on your iMac, copy the Aperture library from your MacBook Pro to your Pictures folder on your  iMac. The fastest way to copy would be to copy the library to an external drive and then from that drive to your iMac. Then double-click the copied library to open it in Aperture.

Any external drive you are using with aperture will need to be formatted MacOS X Extended: See Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library

Thank you very much, I will try.

Another question.  I've put off upgrading to Yosemite.  I'm a little worried.  I have also not upgraded my iPad or iPhone 5S to iOS8.

The reason being is that I really love the way iOS7 and Mavericks all sync the photos.  Also, I love Aperture and am just getting to a more advanced stage of using it, mostly preferring it to Photoshop.   I'm concerned that if I upgrade, when the new "Photo" comes out, will I like it as much as Aperture and will it be operated in a similar way?

We really don't know, sorry. Apple did not say much about the new Photos.app on the Mac, so we will have to waiting see. There is now the compatibility update for Aperture out, version 3.6 for Yosemite, so you can be certain, that Aperture will work for you, if you upgrade to Yosemite. While running Yosemite you will be able to use Aperture and not be forced to migrate to Photos.

Even with iOS 8 on your iPad you will be able to use iTunes Photo sync, if you do not enable iCloud Photo Library Beta on your iPad.
